Ellmau Things to Do

  • The Tiny Chapel on the hill

Maria-Heimsuchungs Kapelle is a big name for such a pretty and tiny Church also known as the Visitation of Mary Chapel or the Holy Mary Chapel. Whatever her name, she is the emblem of Ellmau, constructed in 1719 - 1721 and designed by Johann Kaisermann. The Church was completely renovated in 1988 - 1990. We didn't visit inside, sadly it was closed...

  • Get up early & step into a sunrise

I have seen lots of sunsets from my home village, but usually I don't get up early enough in Summer to catch a sunrise! Here in Ellmau things were the opposite, I can't quite work out why but I seemed to be frequently waken just before dawn. Maybe this was due to the early morniing traffic passing by or more likely the birds awakening, whatever,...

  • Take it easy & catch the details

I never like just going from A to B I much prefer taking time, often doubling back if I see some thing which catches my eye. I loved the details of the little windows, some had pretty painted shutters while others featured intricate designs, no copies here everyone was different. I rarely go anywhere without my camera, even going to the place where...

  • When you see inside the Church

The interior of the Pafarrkirche Erzengel Michael has a certain serene beauty the first sight leaves you in awe. The Church has many undecorated windows of varying shapes which admit a lot of light giving Her an airy sunkissed feel. The High Altar which encompasses Saint Anna's Chapel just shimmers with the gold reliefs which adorn the loveliest of...

  • Ahh bliss sitting in a mountain meadow

Sitting in an alpine meadow at a height of 1,555 meters on the slopes of the Hartkaiser with no one around save for ourselves and some walkers in the distance was sheer bliss on a warm sunny day. Looking down on the distant green valley below, seeing the neighbouring Wilder Kaiser, the still and silent ski lifts, this was the perfect place to...

  • Ice Sorbet with a twist in the tail

On our first day here in Ellmau after a long walk around the village on a very hot day we decided to stop a while and have a refreshing drink. Mestizo's had lovely comfortable seating outside - my seat had a view to the side of the mountains (what else) and the most adorable cherry tree with its abundance of cherries. Looking at the cherries and...

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This tip is not about one shop in particular but the various supermakets in the village which stock just about everything you could possibly need. There are five supermarkets in the village the biggest one was next to our hotel called Mpreis. The others are Billa - Spa -Bauernkaserei and Gentrankermarkt - we noticed that some where shut on certain days or didn't open until mid day but there is always one open for your convienience. There are two banks here too as well as many souvenier shops, clothes shops and of course sports shops.

What to buy: The supermarkets have a good selection of fresh fruit and my favourite Bobby Bars especially the ones with banana cream inside they are coated in Salzburg chocolate and covered in crispy cereal chips. The Supermarket is also a good place to stock up on bottled water.

What to pay: Prices are reasonable for most items - the water and fruit were much cheaper than the U.K.

During our many walks in the countryside we passed by many different Religious Shrines. These shrines always looked well cared for most had fresh flowers placed on or very near to them, some contained candles too. The ones we saw were all dedicated to Jesus and the Virgin Mary, this came as no surprise to me - Austria is a predominantly Roman...

  • Summer Life in the Village

The villagers really do know how to take advantage of their summers and make the most from the warm temperatures. We saw a lot of houses stock piling wood for winter fuel which was left to dry in the warm sun. Solar panels were also used on the roofs to harvest extra energy from the sun's rays for winter use. My two most favourite customs here were...
