  • Weiss-see

Directly on the Kaunertaler Glacier road there is a little lake with a path around it. We stopped and walked around it. My youngest felt the temperature of the water and decided it was to cold to swim in.

In summer 2006, a sensational discovery was made when a mud slide occurred approximately 2 km behind the tollgate: a glacial pothole, which reveals the traces and sculptural power of the glacier from more than 10,000 years ago.

  • Austria's highest road

The highest road in Austria is not the famous Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse but the road up from the Kaunertal along the aritficial lake Gepatsch-Stausee to the melting down glacier at the foot of the Weissseespitze where a few skilifts are operating over some part of the Summer. This scenic and easy to drive road (a toll road) ends at 2800 m...

  • See a glacier from inside

On a short walk you can reach a crevasse of the glacier which is prepared for visitors. The entrance is covered with white fleeces to protect further melting and you may walk a bit into the crevasse - recommended for a hot day ;-).

  • See the glaciers melting away

When investors started to install a Summer Skiing Area about 25 or so years ago all that what you see on these pictures was well covered with ice and when looking south into the Kaunertal the Weissseespitze appeared spotlessly white all the year round. But now this Summer Skiing business seems to terminate in a few years because the glaciers are...

  • Great hikes and climbs

Needless to say that this area offers innumerable great hikes and climbs in various degrees of difficulty. But most of them touch the glaciers so adequate experience and equipment is needed but there are long and rather easy hikes without contact with the ice as well.

  • Summer Skiing

The road which was originally built in connection with the artificial lake was continued up to a height of 2800 m (the highest road in Austria) just to install some skilifts on the glacier below the Weissseespitze. 3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are enough choices to eat up there at the Kaunertaler Gletscher in the Summer skiing area but it is far more authentic to do that at the Gepatschhaus and to sit there nicely among the trees if the weather allows it.

The Kaunertal valley is easily reached. From Landeck follow the road upstream the river Inn (directions Reschen/ St. Moritz. The first village south of Landeck along this road is Prutz. At the traffic light turn left and follow the signs "Kaunertal". The road up to the glacier is closed (a few km south of Feichten) from late autumn until spring. You find this information already signposted short before you reach Prutz on the main road from Landeck.
