Igls Things to Do

  • Kurpark

The Kurpark is a pleasant and fairly large park on a hill behind Igls village centre and near the start of the cable car Patscherkofelbahn. There's a few interesting modern sculptures dotted about the place and the park also has red squirrels which is interesting for those of us from areas where they are now gone. It's a great place to have a slow...

  • St Martin Pfarrkirche in Vill

In the nearby village of Vill is another lovely little church typical of the area. It's the church of St Martin and again it's spire is one of the most useful landmarks whilst walking in the countryside nearby. The churchyard is well maintained and the interior beautiful, although for most of the day you can only see it through a locked gate.

  • Concerts at Igls Parish Church

During the summer months there are frequent evening concerts taking place at the parish church in the village of Igls. These many be organ concerts or string quartets or many others. A programme of upcoming concerts is available from the tourist office next door to the church and the events are also advertised on boards outside the church, the...

  • Inside Igls Parish Church

The Interior of the Parish Church of Igls is a beauty to behold. This little rural church is a real gem with some really lovely wall paintings and ornamentation. I think the small scale of the place allows it too remain tasteful when much bigger churches decorated in this style often (in my opinion) end up looking tacky and glitzy. You can see this...

  • Igls Parish Church

The Parish church of Igls is typical of many that we saw in the area in terms of it's outward appearance, the baroque style and yellow and white colour scheme makes it all feel very Tyrolean. The church bells ring throughout the day and add to the atmosphere in the village, whilst the church tower acts as a useful landmark to help you find your way...

  • Igls

Igls is a very famous winterresort and has great possibilites for both crosscountry skiing, slalom and downhill. But there is also a lot to do here in summer, so it's a great place to visit all of the year. It's situated at 900m above the sea, and is very close to Innsbruck. It's a beautiful city, and worth a stop if you are nearby. Close to the...

  • Summertime

Even if Igls is a very famous winterresort, there are lots of things to do here in the summer too. The most popular is hiking and mountainclimbing which you can read more about in a different tip.If you don't want to do that, or you want to do something different there are lots of other things too. There are two golfcourses close to the city; a...

  • Hiking and mountain climbing

Like in most of this area, the hiking here is incredible. The sceneries are so beautiful and it's fantastic to go walking around here.If you want to try mountain climbing there are lots of possibilities for that. When I was there they used to have free mountain hiking programmes. You could rent the equipment if you needed, and then a guide would...

  • Wintertime

Igls is maybe one of the most famous skiresorts close to Innsbruck. It had some of the competitions when Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympic Games, and the hills here are fantastic. You can find everything from "olympic" slopes, to smaller and friendlier slopes for beginners. The Patscherkofel is a 2200m high mountain next to Igls where you can go...

Igls Transportation

  • Bus Route J

Bus route J is the quickest way to travel between Igls and the city centre of Innsbruck. It's not such a picturesque journey as the tram but it does go all the way into the city centre and it goes every 15 minutes during the day. It's all covered by an Innsbruck card or the usual ticketing system of Innsbruck's public transport system.

  • By Tram to Igls

The most scenic way to reach Igls is by tram number 6 which winds it's way through the forest from Bergisel at the southern tip of the city of Innsbruck. Fares are covered by the ticketing system of Innsbrucks public transport system or included in an Innsbruck Card. The tram also stops at Tummelplatz for Schloss Ambras a great castle to visit. The...

  • Interesting folky articles

This little shop in an attractive building near the tourist office in the centre of Igls sells some interesting craft items and is well worth a quick browse around.Google Map I got some lovely candles at a great price.

  • Anyone for Strawberries?

Now we've all seen vending machines in many places, usually selling junk food and fizzy drinks, but I'd never before seen them selling fresh local produce (mainly strawberries and eggs on this day) from local farmers. That's what you'll find in the village of Vill just outside Igls at the side of the main road. What an excellent idea! I don't know...

  • Walking routes - Viller Moor

The walking/hiking possibilities in this area are almost endless and suit a wide range of abilities/levels of fitness. There are a number of well (reasonably to excellently) sign posted recommended routes of differing lengths. The signs also tell you how hard the walk is as they are colour coded - blue for easy, red for medium, black for difficult....

  • Walking Routes - Turmbichl

This walk is easier and quicker than the Viller Moor route. it visits the village of Vill to the north west of Igls (starting from the centre of Igls) and the lovely alpine meadows around the villages. The start of the walk also takes you down some of the quiet residential streets of Igls which I enjoyed as a chance to be nosy and look at peoples'...
