A Village tunnel
  • Tip Rating:
  • A Village tunnel , taking you from the pedestrian center of the town , opposite of Burger King to the bottom station of the "Fimba" and "Pardatchgrat"gondolas. Especially built for lazy tourists , so that they don't have to walk.

    The Fimbabach Valley
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another day, we left the Silvretta/Fimba Cableway from Ischgl at the midway station, and walked along the Fimbabach Valley, which was very peaceful apart from the almost constant background drone of a helicopter which appeared to be dropping off materials to create new avalanche barriers on the side of the mountain way above us.

    Cross the border...

The Silvretta Arena is lying on Austria and Switzerland. So do not forget your ID card... may be you could met customs officers on skis, even if the Austria-Swiss border is located at around 2800m asl. By the way, do not forget your credit card too... as Saumnau area is also a tax free zone.

The trade with Tyrol was an important source of income for Saumnaun. In 1892, the Swiss Confederation gave it the status of duty-free area as there was no direct access road through Swiss territory to Samnaun and consequently the import of foodstuff to the valley was made more expensive by the imposed customs tax...

So head to this $wi$$ shopping paradise to get perfumes, spirits, watches, jewellery, tobaccos and above all the finest Swiss chocolate ;-)

However, we took the bus to Galtür where we visited The Alpinarium. The displays in it were mainly about the avalanche which killed 31 people in the village in February 1999, and the effect that it had on the community.

When the rain eased off, we set off back to Ischgl, stopping off at...
