Aguntum was the only known Roman settlement in Tyrol. Its importance is mentioned in the 1st century A.D. The significance of Aguntum must have been due to its geographical position close to important trade routes. Excavations show that Aguntum certainly was a prospering trade- and businesscentre in Roman times. In 2000 only a small fraction of the original Roman town has yet been archeologically examined. Big thermal baths and other public buildings had been excavated, the craftsman quarter etc. An observation tower has been erected in the area to make it easier to get an overall picture of the site.
