    Zillertaler Höhenstraße

The Zillertaler Höhenstraße is one of the most beautiful Alpine roads of Austria and offer every visitor a lovely tour. The road takes you up to about 2000 meters high.

Very nice views of the surrounding mountains and the Zillertaler valley are a real treat to anyone who takes this road.

It takes much more time then the Bundesstraße, but it's ten times nicer to drive.

    Open:
    June - October

    Toll:
    Cars: € 7,00
Cars and little buses: € 13,-
    Buses > 12 Seats: € 18,-

    Skiing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Great skiing venue. We went at Easter when the snow was good but became slushy in the afternoon. I would recommend getting the gondola to the very top where it is quieter and there are a couple of great red and blue runs. Skiing is best for the intermediates.

    Erlebnis Sennerei Zillertal

Milk and cheese to see, smell and enjoy!

This is a normal Dairy Factory with a touristic touch. On the ground floor the factory is situated and on the top floor people can take a look in the process of cheesmaking and all other activities normal for a dairy factory.

The products are sold in the in house shop and can be tasted in the Milkbar.

    Opening hours
Daily from 10.00 to 11.30 am. and
    from 12.30 to 3.00 pm.

    All 'bout Cheese
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the Erlebnis-Sennerei Zillertal you can learn everything about the production of cheese, butter and other milk products. At the entrance you get a headset for your tour. During the tour you can listen to different chapters about the cheese fabrication. The headsets are available in different languages. You take a walk through the production center. Actually it is not that exciting, especially on a weekend. But the best about the visit of the Sennerei is the meal that is served after the tour. You get a huge plate with seven different kinds of cheese, a glass of milk and fresh bread. It tastes wonderful! The price for the tour and the cheese plate was about 10,50 Euros. The tour without the meal is about half of that - but you shouldn't go there without enjoying the different cheeses.

    Snowed-in huts
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fresh snow at the Eisberg hut - Mayrhofen
Fresh snow at the Eisberg hut

Everywhere in the ski area are huts and restaurants that offer local specialities and typical fast food dishes. But there are price differences between the different huts. Prices for the same dish (e.g. the Austrian speciality Kaiserschmarrn) might vary more than 3 Euros. One of the cheapest huts we found was the Eisberg (Ice Mountain). The picture was taken outside the hut on a day with a foot of new powder. On sunny days it is gorgeous to sit outside, but on snowy days like that it might be better to warm up inside.

The ski area of the Hintertuxer glacier goes up as high as 3250 meters. At that elevation there is a panorama platform on the "Gefrorene Wand" ("Frozen Wall"). The view is breathtaking. From the mountain top of the "Frozen Wall" there are several intermediate slopes going down. But the main attraction of the area aren't the groomed runs. Much better are the backcountry and deep powder runs. There are lots of safe but challenging ski routes across the glacier. The whole mountain has about 90 kilometers of runs (65 kilometers groomed runs). The area is opened for skiers and boarders all year round. A day ticket during wintertime cost 35 Euro. It might be cheaper during the summer.
