Dopolavoro: In memory of Mussolini - strange Restaurant name

by lotharlerch Updated Jun 22, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are enough restaurants in Rattenberg to feed all tourists. And most of them are exactly that what you may expect at such a touristy place as Rattenberg is. But this restaurant is remarkable for its name. "Dopolavoro" is Italian and means simply "after work". Since it is near the railway station it could be supposed that its guests are Italian speaking railway people.

But "Dopolavoro" was an organization of the Italian Fascists in order to organize (and efficiently control) the leisure time of the working people offering cheap restaurants, affordable organized holiday travel and stays in resorts etc. It was copied one-to-one by the Nazis and named in German "Kraft durch Freude" (popular abbreviation was KdF- i.e. "power through pleasure").

So one could suppose that the restaurant is run and visited by fans of Mussolini (or Berlusconi).

Favorite Dish: I did not visit it but I guess they serve Pizza and Pasta. But check their website for the menu.

Brauhaus Rattenberg: The Best Brewpub in Tirol

One of the best of the nowadays mushrooming brewpubs in Austria is here in Rattenberg.

Since Rattenberg was Bavarian until to the 16th century there was far less restriction on the beer brewing and selling activities than in the old Tirol. Dont forget that Tirol again became Bavarian for a short period under Napoleon's wars and was occupied by Napoleon's Bavarian allies who introduced the far more liberal Bavarian laws for the beer business which was the real motivation for the Tyrolean wine merchant Andreas Hofer to organize the famous uprising against Napoleon and his Bavarian allies which resulted in the famous Bergisel battles of 1809.

One of the numerous breweries which were active here in every town and even village was brewing here in Rattenberg beer until about 100 years ago. It was revived here in 2005. And the result is a really great beer which is more or less exclusively sold here at the spot. And the owner and brewmaster is so self confident that he even invites other Tyrolean micro-brewers to sell their beers here as guest beers. So you have always the opportunity to taste aside of the Fürst beer - changing periodically - one other beer of an other Tyrolean microbrewery thus getting an impression of the remarkably wide spectrum of beer styles in the area.

All other drinks available are strictly regional as well, therefore dont expect to get a Coke or a Sprite here.

And the tasty food is regional as well (it was interesting in this context that when I visited the place together with Ukrainian friends I recommended them to taste to the beer traditional Tyrolean Grey Cheese with onions, oil and vinegar and when Victor tasted the cheese he immediately said - happily enjoying this goodie - that it is exactly the same stuff he remembers his grandmother was making in Western Ukraine).

Favorite Dish: The absolut favourite is of course the top fermented unfiltered beer of the house. We could also taste the actual guest beer which was from the nearby famous village Alpbach, a Kristall Märzen, unfiltered as well, which was very good too, far better than all the beers you normally get from big breweries but we preferred the Fürst Bräu.

Keep in mind that the place opens at 5:00 PM when most of the tourist buses have left.

Gasthaus Kanzler Biener Restaurant Café Bar: Fantastic Austrian Dumplings

    by mlbk888 Written Jan 2, 2008

    Tryrolean dumplings

The menu is predominantly Austrian-German. During the day, most of its guests sit outside on the sidewalk tables: eating, drinking and people-watching - what an idyllic way to spend your day!

Favorite Dish: Tyrolean Dumplings served with fresh green salad. This is Tyrol's answer to the Italian gnocchi topped with a rich cream sauce and chopped chives and bacon bits.

Gasthof Platzbrau: Full of Local Charm!

    by Geoff_Wright Updated Mar 13, 2007

Gasthof Platzbrau is just one of many Restaurants and cafes in Rattenberg. There was no time for us to have a meal here, otherwise we would have had no time for exploring the rest of the town. Several restaurants and cafes have outside seating areas, and prices are very reasonable.
