Explore Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser
Gasthof Weberbauer
sandysmith Says:
This is a small family hotel towards the back of the village in a really quiet place. We didn't stay here but it looked lovely and I spent several minutes admiring the various pictures painted on its façade.
Take a long walk by the Lake Shore
scottishvisitor Says:
The Hintersteinersee covers an area of 56 hectacers and is 36 meters deep it is situated 900 meters above sea level. The lake is owned by the Tirolean Water Authority and is fed by underground springs creating crystal clear pure water. Walking around the lake takes around...
A Place for Sun Worship
scottishvisitor Says:
If you like to be with other people or have children with you this part of the lake would appeal. The sign outside said the water temperature was 22 the land temperature was around 34 so we were tempted, but no we wanted to see the lake in a more natural setting so we went...
The Tourist Office & The Taxi
scottishvisitor Says:
We went into the tourist office to get tickets for the Hintersteinersee bus only to be told we were too late. We were a bit disappointed but the young lad was very helpful telling us he could get us a taxi for 15 euros. The bus price is 3.90 euros per person for a return...
Sunbathing
steevie_wanders Says:
Lie down in the sunlight, but be sure to use Sun Protection!Alternatively, if your skin is really pale (like mine) just reflect the rays straight back up.
Look gorgeous by a lake
steevie_wanders Says:
The Hintersteiner See was THE place to see and be seen. All of Scheffau society was out there most afternoons sporting the latest swim wear... not!Actually a beautiful green coloured lake, surprisingly quiet, despite being next to a small road. The water was cool, deep, and...
Rafting them white waters
steevie_wanders Says:
White water rafting! There's plenty of fast moving mountain rivers in the Tirol area. And many rafting companies!I was lucky to have a free day out with the company I worked for. Secretly I think they were trying to drown us ;)
Rock climbing on all that rock
steevie_wanders Says:
Loads of rock climbing round here! It's limestone galore.Get a local guidebook and head out there.I forget the name of the colossal waterfall climbing area in the pic. unfortunately. That was crazy - I didn't do that!
Mountain Biking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
steevie_wanders Says:
Get a bike, ride up and up and up. Have a funny sign language conversation with a guy carrying a big gun and wearing traditional hunting dress.Ride down again as fast as you like.Shout 'Weeeeeeeeeeee' as you come down..Optional extra: Go up, watch sunset, come down in the...
Facade Paintings
sandysmith Says:
This is just one of the many facade paintings seen on the Gasthof Weberbauer - one othe little chapels near to the Hintersteinersee - the lake which is a some 3km up the road from the village. Check out its own VT page for more views of the lake and the 10 hour hike we did...
Seesstuber Restaurant: Pick your own trout
scottishvisitor Says:
We stopped here twice once when we arrived and again on our return to the bus stop. The restaurant has extensive terraces with wonderful views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Inside it is cool and spacious with ample seating. We chose to sit outside where ample shade...

Well with only one bar in Scheffau, you have to make your own fun..
Dress Code: Dinner jacket, white shirt, Walther PPK. The multicoloured bow tie wasn't my idea - company work wear!

Riding the Scheffau lift
sandysmith Says:
On the ride up the Brandstl lift the fir trees were really laden with fir cones - I'd never seen so many, they must literally have been ready to drop. Don't forget to look at the scenery too as you glide effortlessly up.
The Legend of the Lake
scottishvisitor Says:
This is a magical location and what's a bit of magic without a bit of mythical folklore. Many years ago where the lake now stands two cocky, wealthy but arrogant farmers once lived they wanted for nothing and even made their bowling balls out of butter to show off to each...
Always say 'Gross Gott' to the cows
steevie_wanders Says:
It's always pleasant to say hi to the cows. In Austria the polite form is 'Gross Gott' (Austrians please correct me on my spelling). The cows appreciate it and once you get to know them, they sometimes will play you 'jingle bells' using their own neck bells.Moo!
This road may seem a quiet track
scottishvisitor Says:
The road (realy just a track) which winds its way along the lake shore would be the perfect place to walk. The downside is you have to share it with cars travelling in both directions. Although it was never busy a lot of cars did pass us only to turn and come back, maybe...
Killer Haystacks
steevie_wanders Says:
Watch out for those haystacks on poles. They look innocent enough, but get too close, and whamm!! In 4 months time you're cow food..
Take along some sunscreen wipes
Helpfulness
scottishvisitor 1572 reviews
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Although I always applied sun screen before going out for a day trip in the morning. I also took along some sunscreen wipes. These are lighter to carry than a bottle of sunscreen and leave you feeling refreshed on a hot day. I also always have some baby wipes too - handy for cleaning up your hands and face and they too have a cooling effect.
Photo Equipment: Make sure your camera is fully charged or carry spare batteries and an extra memory chip. There are no shops here in the great outdoors.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: As you pass so many beautiful spots along the lake shore you will be tempted to have a quick dip so bring a small towel and your swim suit.
Miscellaneous: Walking in hot weather is hard work so make sure you have some bottled water with you.
