  • Warning: Death Risk

by nmcanada Written Feb 14, 2007

A young Canadian died on the slopes of Stubaier when he fell into a crevice. Ski resort staff did not search for him at the end of the day when he did not return his rented equipment or remove his parked car, and local police dismissed the case. His body did not appear until 14 years later when the ice melted. The body had been lacerated by the slope's grooming equipment, which suggests the young man had been alive after his fall and had been able to climb up the crevice; but since the resort had refused to look for him, he was killed by the machinery. Both the resort and the police refused to do formal searches for him. There has never been a formal investigation, and police shrug off their responsibilities. Ski resorts in this region will go to great lengths to dodge liability and responsibility, and police passively support them, because tourism is big business. Safety standards are low, and accidents of this sort are expected. Ultimately, your safety is your own concern - don't expect help at the professional level you are used to in your home country. Always ski, hike, and snowboard with friends, and let family know if and when you are going up to Stubaier.

Go to the top of Tirol on a clear day

If it's a clear day, make your way up to the top of Tirol. You can do this by taking the red Eisgrat cable car to the top, then change to another cable car.

At the top, you'll get spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, and I've been told that it's possible to see Venice with binoculars on a very clear day.

    Gamsgarten in November 2003

My first experience with the Glacier of Stubai was on a cloudy november day, when I went to bring my work application to Paul - the Snowboard school chef. I did not like it, than, I still consider it not a place for me even after a season spent there, but it was worth the experience...

The No1 - over the glacier

The No1 - over the glacier

This is the Slope No1, probably the most used one on the glacier, and even tho it is marked as a blue run , some areas shoud be displayed as red. Underneath lies the eternal river of ice, or in other words the glacier. It connects Icegrat with Gamsgarten.
On the top part you have a parralel slalom parcours.
During holidays it gets terribly crowded, better avoid it, the glacier is big enough...go to "Fernau" for example.

On Tour in the Stubai Glacier

This is in unusual situation, you see....
As you are happily gliding down the slopes, all of a sudden you bump into people walking uphill, which brings you to the idea- "There must be something wrong here!!! Is it me, or them ?"
But don't you worry, you are just doind like everybody else - using the lifts on the way up and riding on the way down
    They choose to walk up....

    Mickey Mouse Kids Club

    Mickey Mouse Kids Club
Situated at 2600m by Gamsgarten it is the biggest Kinder area that I've seen so far. A huge Mickey mouse greets you at the entrance and the three magic carpets are there for your kids to save their forces learning how to ski, rather than walking uphill. The Stubai ski school is mainly children orientated and works in collaboration with Eurodisney / Paris . You are sure to have your kid being offered the best.
You can see the two covered magic carpets of the Mickey mouse kinderland , and why are they covered , you would ask?Hahahaa So that your kids don't get blown away , when the wind decides to play bad tricks on them....
Hans that was in charge of the kid's area two seasons ago is the lovliest man ever...He's so patient and always ready to help

This is what I hated - Foggy , minus 20 etc

This is what I hated - Foggy , minus 20 etc

Obviously when there is no sun it gets insanely cold at 2900m, and the freezing wind maked your fingers numb, but you still have to go out and give a lesson to that kid that has been waiting for long to learn how to snowboard....
Actually most of all I hated the fog....You just don't see where the snow ends and where the sky starts - it's all the same damn white gray color as far as you can see....
