The camera took it.

I am not like o00o, who manages to turn the person from the country he is visiting, into a skilled photographer, nor like donrafa who pops the camera at you no matter where you are, nor MarvintheMartian who makes sure you know who took the great photos.

I jest my friends, they are great guys and I am just the photographer that set the timer to take his own photo a few years ago.

I hope you enjoyed my trip to the top of the Muttersberg at Bludenz, Vorarlberg, Austria.

Muttersberg cross.

If you wondered why I missed some of the view as I turned to take photos all around the mountain. Well the fact that the cross is there did make the task a little more difficult. Oh, I suppose I could have climbed to the top and stood on the top and turned gradually round to record all the details.

I doubt if I could have climbed the metal work and even if I had, I do not like those precarious heights. So you will have to live with my little presentation, even if it is not perfect.

Full circle.

The mountains return in full force and just beyond the mountains is the route the raod and rail lines use to reach the Arlberg pass, the long tunnel and then the downhill run to Landeck.

Work has been completed on some rail line changes at St Anton and the road also is well engineered as it curves gracefully through the valleys and tunnels through some of those hills and mountains.

View to the North and Northeast.

there is one road that goed into this area, but it is narrow and further west from this view.

It is possible to travel to Damuls and the village of Au in the Bregenzerwald, see my Bregenz page, the Road at Au takes you through some beautiful country to Dornbirn or to the east to Schrocken, Warth and Lech.

Back to the hills.

I turn more to the north and leave the views of the valley behind.

There are more small woods and less farm land as the hills and mountains appear.

The roads are no doubt narrow and do not go far into the valleys.

To the west of Bludenz

The road and rail lines run more to the north west here as the view takes in the south west to western aspect of the town and the Ill valley.

Bludenz in the valley is at an altitude of 588 m/1929 ft. that is about 2500 ft below the top of the mountain.

Just in case you feel like some food there is a small cafe on the way up from the cable way.

Bludenz is below.

When staying in Bludenz the view from the Landhaus Mutter was the mountain across the valley in the photo.

The other valley to the right and facing the camera is the Brandnertal and it is the way to the Lunersee, see Off the Beaten Path.

On top of Muttersberg

To the north of Bludenz lies Muttersberg and by combining a hike a cable way and a further hike it is possible to reach the top at 1412 m /4600 ft.

Literally on a clear day you can see forever. The following photos give some idea of the panoramic view from the top.
Sorry folks it is in the days before digital cameras and their ability to combine the views into a great panoramic photo.

Be warned there are 8 more views to follow.

The first view shows the eastern end of Bludenz and the valley of the Ill as it descends from the Silvretta Stausee and the Silvretta pass. The highest mountain in that area is Piz Buin at 3312 m.

Themain road and rail link to eastern Austria takes a sharp left at the east end of Bludenz and climbs to the Arlberg Pass.

Few houses and farms

The terrain gets rougher and the valleys steeper, certainly not as inviting as the small villages and towns in the Montafon valley to the south east of Bludenz.

Broad valley of the Ill.

More farmland and lower mountains to the west.
The railway can be seen as it runs through the small wood at the left of the photo.

The town of Feldkirch is at the top right hand side of the view.
