St. Gallenkirch is a rather small village in the province of Vorarlberg in Austria. It is situated in the so called 'Montafon', a valley along the river 'Ill' and stretches from Bludenz till the Silvretta mountains.
There are 11 villages between a height of 650 and 1430 metres. St. Gallenkirch lies in the centre of Montafon, just 19 km's from the motorway in Bludenz and is very easy accessible by car and public transportation.
It has about 2.300 permanent inhabitants, but during the holidays there are a lot more people staying in this mountain village. When walking around it seems if every house offers guest rooms. Holiday must be big business.
Most of the people live in the village centre along the main road and some side roads. There is a second 'centre' - called Galgenul - more or less around the gondola station.
This is perhaps one of the disadvantages, because most of the visitors have to use their car or free public bus to reach one of the lifts to the main ski area Silvretta Montafon (the former Silvretta Nova). Both are just outside the village centre.
St. Gallenkirch is still a simple honest village, with no fancy things or vibrant after ski or night life. I think there are just 2 (night) bars. It is a destination for sporty people, who come to ski and not to party.
The 'Haus des Gastes' houses the local tourist information centre for all your tourist information and last minute accommodation search. It is located along the main road in the centre of the village.

As said in my other tip St. Gallenkirch is a rather small village without the fancy shops in some other wintersport villages. There are just a couple of ordinary shops to fulfil the daily purchases of the local people and tourists.
St. Gallenkirch has just one supermarket, bakery, flower shop, newspaper booth and a (herb) chemist. 'Of course' you will find a couple of sports shops to rent or buy your ski/board gear.
Not quite a shopping paradise !!
There are also two banks - with both an ATM - along the main road in the village. There is also an ATM at the gondola station of the Valisera Bahn.
St. Gallenkirch offers a couple of restaurants, but our two favourites are Därfli and Muntanella.
A lot of people bring their own ski gear when on holiday.
But we decided a couple of years ago to hire equipment in our holiday destination St. Gallenkirch.
Main reasons to do:
- always the latest ski models
- if necessary service every day
- possibility of exchange of equipment
- don't need to bring our own ski's in a ski box on the car
- no need for maintenance of our own ski's
St. Gallenkirch has three shops, which offer rental ski's:
Intersport Montafon at the bottom station of the Valisera Gondola;
Sport Thomas in the village; this is a smaller shop;
Harrys Sportshop, along the main road in the village.
We always hire at Harrys Sportshop with friendly and helpful local people. They charge fair prices, which vary (for the latest ski's) from € 18,- per day till € 89,- for 6 days.
Of course they rent also snowboards, ski boots and other equipment.
