Sylvesterpfad / New Year's Eve in Vienna

by globetrott

Silvester-Pfad is the name of the festivities going on in Vienna at New Years Eve, when all of the inner city of Vienna is full of different shows, food-stands and when you are able to dance in the streets ( IN CASE that you find enough place to do so !!) In front of the townhall / Rathaus you can get dancing-lessons for viennese-waltz, beginning at 02.00p.m. and at night you can dance there as well in the open air, another open-air-dance-floor will be on Graben. The Silvester-Pfad starts at 02.00p.m. and has an open end, although the official end is at 02.00a.m. - see the program and some pics at the web-link below !Be aware of the fact that the city of Vienna will be terribly crowded that day, especially close to Stephansdom, where Bummerin, the biggest bell of Austria will ring at midnight !Pfad is the expression for path and along that path you will find the right place for your kind...

shopping at Xmas Dec. 24th & 31st

by globetrott

In Dec 24th & 31stmany shops & restaurants areclosing early and many of them decide not to inform their customers about that. Most of the shops and restaurants will be open like in an ordinary weekday, but after 02.00pm most of them will be closed, even shops and restaurants along the highways will be closing early without prior warning.Dec. 24th in the evening is when the children get their Xmas-presents, this is why everybody is heading home early in the afternoon.Dec 25th and 26th all shops will be closed, some restaurants do as wellDec 31st shops will also close at around noon, some restaurants will close early as well, in the other restaurants you need a reservation and order the expensive New Years Buffet.-----------------------Some exceptions :Restaurant LubellaKärtnerstrasse 32 | Führichgasse 1 Tel +43-1-512 62 55 great international, russian and italian kitchen AND it is open...

a X-mas-market that ends not before January 6th

by globetrott

Nostalgie-Wintermarkt am Riesenradplatzis not really an xmas-market and the best about it is the location next to the Riesenrad / the giant Ferris Wheel. They have some sweets, hot and cold drinks, almost no christmas-shops and in my opinion they built this market for only one single reason:Riesenrad is the only reason for tourists to go to Prater in wintertime and so all the food-stands from all parts of the prater set up their shops there. This Wintermarket is open in 2009/2010 dailyfrom Nov. 21st till January 6th21. November 2009 - 6. Jänner 2010Monday till Thursday: 02.00 till 10.00pmFriday from 11.00am till 10.00pmSaturday&Sundays: 10.00am till 10.00pm Some link for more infos:www.riesenradplatz.at

Everything BUT a Xmas-market in MQ

by globetrott

Winter in MQEverything BUT a Xmas-marketThis is the motto of various activities in MQ (Museumsquartier):You can try "Eisstock-schiessen" , you can go skating and ice-climbing and when you enlarge my main photo you will see a racingtrack for small cars: try to break the rekord for 1 full round , it is a bit less than 6 seconds.Something that is totally missing still with all of these attractions at December 1st, 2009 is the snow and the cold air. Only Eisstockschiessen is possible already, skating and ice-climbing not yet. They had an "Icepalace" for food and drinks there, but that burned down some days ago and so they serve drinks and food now at those places, where they do it in summertime.

At Karlsplatz : walk a Lama, ride a horse

by globetrott

At Karlsplatz you children will find a lot of great entertainments : One of them was walking with a Lama, another one is riding a horse in that place in front of Karlskirche, where the lake will be during the summertime. There is a small train for children as well, see it in my 2nd photo !

At Karlsplatz : Meet an angle at 05.30pm

by globetrott

This is one of the many attractions of the Xmas-market of Karlsplatz : Every day at 05.30pm there is a show with an angle, who will first dance above the giant globe in front of the church and finally it will "fly down" to meet and dance with the children, that is certainly an unique adventure for children and also for everybody who is young at heart. No entrancefees, just go there and take a look and make sure to find a good (standing)place.
