During the " Christkindlmarkt " in Schoenbrunn-castle you will see some great stands offering local cuisine, like Kaiserschmarrn, beeing explained in my next picture...

Eating out in the cold open air, just in front of the lovely castle.
" Schupfnudeln " " Krautfleckerln " " Kasnudeln " are some more local specialities offered during the 4 or 5 weeks before Christmas daily from 10.00 a.m. till 08.30 p.m.

" Schmarrn " is a word used in Austria for 2 things :
    1) something useless, you spent money for and then it does not work at all...

2)a sweet kind of fluffy pancake made of lots of eggs, raisins, flour and sugar. Baked about 2 cm thick and finally teared apart to get the small pieces you will eat.

As this dish was also the favorite meal of the Austrian Kaiser Franz Joseph, it was finally called " Kaiserschmarrn "
Maybe also by the fact, that Schmarren for the poorer population was made mainly with potaoes and maybe 1 egg, but the Kaiser was able to aford plenty of eggs, and therefore did not take potatoes...

Zwetschkenröster is a stew made of whole plums, rosted a bit so it gets thick almost like jam, but the fruits will not fall apart

If you get hungry while doing the tourist thing there are some small cafes off the side of the Palace grounds to the right when looking from the entrance. They are down a little side area between the Palace buildings near the carriage museum.

Here we found a great bowl of goulash soup and brot (bread) and a real good bottle of Austrian wine all for under 10 euros.

After our disappointing guided tour of the Palace, and a quick turn around the wintery gardens in the rain, we were glad to sit down in the elegant surroundings of the Cafe Residenz before leaving the Palace grounds.
We ordered cafe wien melange and apfel strudel - the latter was to die for, the coffee local -but not quite to our taste for stronger, black coffee.
The ambience made up for it though, and even the bill - 19. 60 euros for 2 left us un-phasesd!
