U-Bahn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Arriving in Schoenbrunn is very easy. Just take the U-Bahn and head to the green line. The best stop is, as name says, Schoenbrunn (in green line). After leaving the train, do as I did: follow everybody else who looks like tourist. You will easily find the main entrance to the palace; it's a 5minute walk from the U-Bahn.

When you want to go to the Zoo of Schoenbrunn, the exit " Hietzing " will be the right one for you.
Leaving the U-Bahn there also makes sense, if you plan to see the old station " Hofpavillion " made ONLY for the emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph II to be able to leave the train in a seperate station.

On my pic you may see the " Hofpavillion " on top

Take U4 and leave at " Schoenbrunn " - for a visit of the castle.
The old train-stations were built by Otto Wagner, who was one of the most famous architects at the end of the 19th century in Vienna.
The castle-entrance is in a distance of maybe 500 meters.

The Kaiser used this station ONLY ONCE.
Today it is used as a museum, beeing open daily 01.30 p.m. - 04.30 p.m. (except mondays)
I took this pic at night, with almost no car-trafic in " Schoenbrunner Allee " - but during the day there will be steady & heavy car-trafic.

Have a look for the special terrace, where the Kaiser could enter his carriage without getting wet during rain or snow

    The Palace Train
  • Tip Rating:
  • At Schönbrunn there is a little train that will take you all over the zoo and the Palace grounds. This is the best way to see some of the areas that you might miss and areas that are off limits to walking people.

You can hop on and off the train all day and is a good way to avoid climbing the hill to the top.

When you get to the top of the hill stop and take a break for a coffee and a little walk around.

    The train to Schönbrunn
  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting to Schönbrunn is very easy from both the road and the train. The train comes into town about every 20 minutes and is cheap to ride. If you are staying in Vienna then I think this is the best way to get here, as you do not need to pay for parking and you and enjoy the sights as you ride the train.

The train station is only a two-minute walk to the Palace entrance.

When you are at Schonbrunn, there are horse carriages which offer a traditional and romantic way of viewing the historical sights. Horse carriages are also common in other parts of Vienna city, especially at the Holfburg Palace area. One important thing to note is that the horse carriage ride will be expensive.

The easiest way to travel from the Vienna city centre area to Schonbrunn is by the subway (U-Bahn). The Schonbrunn subway station is located on the U4 line of the U-Bahn. If you are at Karlsplatz station in the city centre, it will be easy because this is also on the U4 line (5 stations away). If you are at Stephansplatz station, you can take the U1 line to Karlsplatz (or walk there), followed by taking the U4 line.

If you are going to Schonbrunn, it is important to give yourself half a day or more to explore because this place and its surrounding premises are very big with the gardens, zoo, monuments etc.

During spring to autumn, the good weather allows you to have a leisurely stroll and this is really a very good way to spend the holidays. Take your time and enjoy this wonderful place (please visit my travelogue pages to see more photos).
