In the hostel where I stayed, there was a tip hang on the wall that there's the cleanest water in the world in Vienna...So you can drink tap water there... Even so, I still can't do that...Still feel uneasy...

"The 3rd Man" (1949) was filmed in Vienna - see the sewers and cemetery. This film is always shown at the Burg Kino, one of the cinema that shows films in English/original language. The film is about an american author Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) who arrived in Vienna to meet old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). On arrival he finds Harry was just killed in an accident and attends his funeral. The police were happy that his death was an accident but Martins begins to investigate the accident and found out things that lead him to a shocking discovery that will eventually challenge his values and friendship.
Classic British thriller movie like Hollywood seldom used to make. The film is constantly dark and shadowy. The city of Vienna is shown as both beautiful and in ruins. The final confrontation in the sewers of Vienna is excellent.

Of course there are a lot of ticket offices around the city, where you can buy tickets for the various theatres, cultural events and the opera. Usually these offices ask for an additional fee for their services. A very convenient way to get your tickets is to book them via internet. Almost every theatre here has a web site in English, where you can see the programmes and the seating plans and book your tickets. Some examples: www.staatsoper.at www.volksoper.at www.burgtheater.at www.volkstheater.at www.musicalvienna.at (Theater an der Wien, Ronacher and Raimundtheater, they show Musicals mostly) Another useful site is www.oeticket.com (tickets for all kind of concerts and events in Austria). The prices of theatre tickets start at ca EUR 3-4 ; while for an evening at the Staatsoper you`ll have to invest between EUR 7 (standing ticket) and EUR 178. Leave a Comment

Selection of tourist office information by Ekaterinburg The city maps delivered to hotels, guesthouses etc are the most practical guides to Vienna you will use. Guidebooks obviously supply more detailed info but the 'City Map and Museums' by Vienna Info was the definitely the most helpful source I had while I was in the city. There are two easy to follow maps, and information about almost every attraction. More importantly, this information is bang up to date in terms of opening hours, admission prices and transport hints. I carried this with me everywhere and left the heavy books for research in the evenings. This saves a lot of weight in terms of what you are lugging around all day. The Tourist Information Office at Albertina was the one I used for all my queries, stocking up on leaflets brochures etc. The staff are very helpful and you can get details of absolutely everything that's currently happening. Tourist Info has a special leaflet dealing with safety tips for visitors to Vienna. A practical aspect to this is the list of telephone numbers and contacts in the event of theft, lost documents etc. Loss or theft of any of your belongings can be tracked, once reported to the to the police, on the website www.fundamt.gv.at

A Bird? a plane? - No, it's SUPERMUMOK! by Ekaterinburg, 1 more photos Vienna's Museum Quartier certainly deserves a general tip because a visit there is so easy and even if you never visit a museum you will have got a feeling for the vibrant arts and cultural life of Vienna. The quarter is situated behind the Ringsrasse around buildings which were the former stables of the hapsburg horses. If you cut through Mariateresenplatz with the giant Kunsthistoriche Museum on one side and the Natural History Museum on the other you only have to cross the road to come to Museumplatz. You enter under an arch and to your left and right is Electric Avenue a really funky, modern shopping and cafe area. Coming through the arch the Leopold museum is on your left, MUMOK ( the modern art museum) is on your right and Kunsthalle Wien is straight ahead of you. The open space in front is always buzzing with activity - music, impromptu performances, etc. When I was there they had winter festivities and a narrow ice-rink for some off-the wall ice-based games. These buildings are essentially galleries, not museums and an hour or so spent in any one of them certainly does not involve any poring over detailed or boring exhibits. Combined tickets areavailabe for Leopold and MUMOK. The website is www.mqw.at. Check it for details of prices, opening hours, temporary exhibitions etc.

This church is also very different to the usual Viennese Baroque being neo-byzantine in design and really looking very unlike a church at all from the outside. It's in the old Fleischmarkt area, once frequented by many Greek merchants who eventually built their own church and had it re-designedn in mock- Byzantine style in 1861. This red brick edifice sticks out a mile in Vienna and the gilt in the castellations make it even more prominent. Inside though it is truly beautiful, small and mysterious. Two silver and glass chandeliers light up the darkness which comes from black marble-type walls and very dark paintings. As you become more accustomed to the dimly-lit interior you begin to pick out the icons and frescoes and appreciate the very rich decoration. On the gates into the inner sanctuary is a wonderful Annunciation, two seperate panels representing Mary and the Angel who is telling her she will become the Mother of God. The congregation here is obviously small with seating restricted to just one row, flush with the wall and a balcony upstairs. There was no entrance fee for visiting the church but you can pay a small fee to light some candles inside and presumably this helps with the upkeep.
