Watching the ice skaters
Fondest memory: Watching the Viennese skating in front of the Rathaus while drinking Glühwein. The kids even have a small rink to themselves. Good thing - from what I witnessed on the main rink with people crashing into the hoardings and each other, it looks like a dangerous sport!

Rathaus - town hall
Favorite thing: The " Rathaus " , situated on Ringstraße, opposite of " Burgtheater " , was built between 1872-83 in Neo-gothic style.
Fondest memory: In front of the town-hall you will see different activities all over the year : In December the " Christkindlmarkt " in Jan/March the whole square will be iced for scaters for several weeks, and in summer there will be music-performances right in front of the townhall.
This pic is taken in the " Burggarten " - the townhall is in the back and in the front you see the " Theseustempel "
Favorite thing: The central area (I. Bezirk) is surrounded by the monumental buildings and gardens of the Ring Road, the area developed between 1859 and 1888 on the site of the old fortifications and surrounding glacis which linked up the heart of the medieval town with the old suburbs.
Volksgarten - Theseus Temple
Favorite thing: Dating from the 1820s, which "Graecomania" in Vienna was at its height, the Theseus Temple is a replica of a 5th century structure in Athens. It's a major focus of attention inside the Volksgarten, which is an excellent place to relax, to stroll, to people-watch, or tap a nap on one of the compfortably scattered benches nearby.

Favorite thing: Walk the Ring, the main pedestrian streets and in the Hofburg area, and lose your mind trying to digest all the fabulous buildings and architecture you see on the way. Get someone who lives there or has been there to tell you what is what.
Fondest memory: The laid-back atmosphere, the life in the streets, the weird people on every corner, the ice cream at Tichy, the packed 'Stüberln' and 'Heurigen' .. and lots of other things!
lengyelp's General Tip
Fondest memory: A reception in the Rathaus. When you enter the building, you gasp. Then, when you step into the main hall... no more words. An incredibly large hall, with all the decorations you would expect in an imperial ballroom, e.g. in the 'Sissi': chandeliers, mirrors, gilded ornaments, French windows with a beautiful view from them, a Viennese orchestra playing... The only thing I missed was a crowd of people in 19th century clothes dancing waltz (Well, there was quite a big crowd, but nobody was dancing. Instead, everybody was devouring the mountains of delicacies served.)

Favorite thing: In December 1883 Austria´s Chamber of Deputies and Upper Chamber moved to the new Parliament. Tours of the Parliament are given regularely except when the Governement is in session. (When the Houses convene, flags are flown on the poles at the front of the building.)
The first place we headed for...
Favorite thing: The first place we headed for was the Rathaus (see below) and to get there we had to pass through the Volksgarten. This was a pleasant, shady place on such a hot day, and across the road in the Rathauspark there were stalls selling food and beer. The food looked very tempting and there was a wide range of different cultural cooking, but unlucky for us, no vegetarian. This pic is in Rathauspark, looking back towards the National Theatre.
And now looking the other way...
Favorite thing: And now looking the other way towards the Rathaus. In case it looks familiar (epecially to my Belgian friends) it was modelled on the style of the Grand Place in Brussels (though it's obviously not an exact replica).

Favorite thing: catch a glimpse of the awesome Rathaus. Noticed the Rathaus' Middle Tower? Well, it stands at almost 100 meters high and it's topped with a 3.40-meter 'Rathausmann'. Very interesting!
Fondest memory: Ah, Rathaus Park is also worth seeing with two spouting fountains and several monuments built in honor to Waltz composers, Johann Strauss and Joseph Lanner amongst others.

Favorite thing: Take the tram No.1 that goes around the city center. It gives you a lot of good views of the important places, and you can just hop off if you feel you have to stay somewhere right now, and hop on later.
Fondest memory: Street lights are strung on wires in Vienna as opposed to being mounted on posts. I really like the way the wires have created a star here with the Rathaus in the background.
Favorite thing: This is a great garden on the Ring, between the Burgtheater and the Hofburg. Hundreds of colorful flowers in spring, all with a name tag.

Favorite thing: Vienna was a great city, it was beautiful and was always fresh will flowers of all sorts. I loved the fountains, parks and lovely buildings!

Favorite thing: This is the Rathaus. The day i went there (Sunday), they had an ice rink built in front, with lots of food, drinks, music, and other stuff...
