Vienna Opera Ball

The highlight of Vienna's social calendar, and the most important event, in the Viennese culture lives, is the Opera Ball that happens every year, into the Viennese Opera House.
"Rich dance for the poor", was the motto of the first opera ball, on the 26 January 1935.
At that time, the turnover of the opera ball was donated, at the "winter help": warm clothing and fuel for the penurious folk.
Annually, on the last Thursday in the Fasching, the stage and the parquet of the state opera are changed into a big dance ground.
Then, the shiniest event of the ball season, the opera ball begins in the flower-decorated house.
This year, 2006, meant for the Viennese State Opera, a doubled jubilee, 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the 50th opera ball.

Schoenbrunn castle

FASCHING is the austrian expression for Carneval - and in comparison to Venice or Cologne our kind of Carneval is certainly nothing you would miss, if you miss it...

BUT attending a BALL in Vienna is always something special and something you see nowhere else THAT way.

Formal dresses are a Must !!
No jeans or colorful suits for men.

On my pic : One of the most beautiful rooms of Schoenbrunn castle.
Some balls are held in rooms at least looking almost as beautiful.

At the ball in the Hofburg Palace

In the early months of the year is when the Viennese ball season takes place, culminating in the very famous Opernball held in the State Opera on the last Thursday before Lent begins. Ball tickets begin at around 40€, check with the Tourist Office for more details.
