As a cultural centre of Europe, Vienna became home to many of the most famous classical composers of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Some of them were born there and lived there most of their lives, others stayed there over a period. Many of those great artists died in Vienna and are buried there. The list is longer, but here is a sample: Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), W.A. Mozart (1756-1791), Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Franz Liszt (1811-1886), Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), Franz Lehár (1870-1848), Anton Bruckner, Johann Strauss the Elder (1804-1849), Johann Strauss the Younger (1825-1899), Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), Hugo Wolf (1860-1903), Alban Berg (1885-1935), Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951). (They all died in Vienna except Liszt, Lehár and Schönberg).
