    Jesuit Church

    Loyola in Wien

This church dates from the Counter-Reformation, when the Jesuits were trying to ensure that any vestiges of Protestantism were firmly stamped out in Vienna. I didn't get a chance to look inside, but I've been told it is even more overpowering than the interior of the Dominican Church around the corner. Just across the square is the old University of Vienna.

    The Leopoldskirche

by yooperprof Updated Sep 2, 2003 3387 reviews

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    soft evening glow

The Leopoldskirche sits handsomely atop the Leopoldsberg - not really a mountain, but at an elevation of 425 meters it offers impressive views of the Danube Valley to the west. The church was built in the 1690s, during the reign of Emperor Leopold I - hence its name. It commemorates an all-important battle victory fought nearby - the imperial troops (and their Polish allies) defeated Turkish invaders who had occupied Vienna's western suburbs. For more on the Leopoldskirche - and the surrounding hills - see my travelogue "A Hike in the Vienna Woods."

    Orthodox church

This one seems to me an Orthodox church, it was not at the old city region so I assume it is not that old, but still, it looks beautiful

The base of the column features a latin inscription, praising the sponsors of the church and heralding God's bounty in inspiring its completion.

Get inside the Votivkirche (near by the Vienna University). It is one of the most beautiful churches in Vienna. And walk in the park in front of it.
