 | Vienna Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 870 | | This cafe and restaurant INside the Kunsthistorisches museum is a Must for its great architecture and for great cakes & dishes ! The cafe is situated right under the big dome and that way it might be the most beautiful place to have a coffee in Austria ! Prices are a bit higher than in an ordinary cafe, BUT the quality is also very good and the architecture is for free. Unfortunately there is NO way to get to this place without having payed the entrance-fee for the museum first !! There is a similar cafe in Naturhistorisches Museum, but the architecture is a tiny bit less ornate.
The Cafe in Kunsthistorisches Museum is a good place to taste austrian cakes : my favorite was Esterhazy-Torte : a cake with hazlenut-filling and on top it has a glazing of white sugar with a chocolate-pattern in it. Coffee is made "the austrian way" strong and with a foam on top. Every thursday between 06.30p.m. and 10.00p.m. you may taste there a large buffet of Viennese specialities: hors d'oevres, hot meals and sweet Austrian deserts for a fixed price of 34 Euros per person Eat what-ever you like & as much as you can That price does NOT include the ticket to the museum!! Make reservations at their telephone/fax-number below !! I never did like Austrian food until I was brought to this Restaurant by my date. In the past, I find austrian food to be too rich, greasy and too salty. However, Waldviertlerhof changed my mind forever about real austrian food. For the first time since coming to Vienna, I finally had some really good austrian food. It is neither too greasy, rich or salty. The portions were generous and large. The salads were fresh and crisp. The meat was excellent and the austrian wines were wonderful. The desserts were sinfully delicious. I was told that majority of the food served in this austrian restaurant comes from the Waldviertler region of Austria, where the food is of good quality and farm-fresh. As for the prices, it was not expensive at all. For Euro 12, you can get a large full meal including drinks. The restaurant is large, warm and cosy, with typical austrian country decor and pine wooden furnitures. When I enter the restaurant, I forgot that I am in the middle of a city. The place is lively and busy with local patrons, happily drinking beer and wines, and chatting animatedly and loudly. It's like being in the country-side. All the staffs wore typical austrian costume/outfits. The service is good and quick; the waiters are nice and friendly. Some of them can speak English. If you go in Summer, you can sit in the outdoor summer garden, where you will be eating under a huge shady tree. This restaurant is popular amongst the locals/viennese, so if you plan to have dinner there, better if you call ahead and make reservations. The restaurant is not open on Saturday and Sunday.
You must try the Toscana Schnitzel. Very different than the typical Wiener schnitzel, and very delicious. If you are not very hungry, try the Chicken Salad. You can have either fried chicken strips or grilled chicken strips with the green salad. It will be dressed with pumpkin-seed oil, and taste so good and healthy. For dessert, you must try the eispalatschinken or pancakes (crepes) with vanilla ice and chocolate fudge. Mmmmm... so yummy! The ambience is not why I go there - it's narrow and long, dark furnitures, a long bar, tables and high tables with very high stools - nothing special. But of course there are things, why I like Caffe Latte. The mixture of Cafe, Italian restaurant and cocktail bar is one of it. Getting food freshly cooked, you can watch the cook and you get it until midnight, that's also one. The garden is open only in Summer and until 10 pm.
My favorite dish is Spaghetti aglio olio con scampi e pepperoncini - which means: Spaghetti with olive oil, garlic, chilli and king prawns. Nepalese people living in Vienna, creating Nepalese atmosphere inside a Viennese house - it works! They also have a wonderful garden, so when you stay in Vienna in the warmer times sit outside and enjoy the evening. Even when it rains, there are some tables save under a roof but still outside. In Winter they close that area with Nepalese tent material - wonderful to sit there. Since a few months they opened one room which is made traditional Nepalese. The tables are so low, that they look a bit like a low bed in Europe. You sit on pillows and you can eat with your fingers, as they do in Nepal.
The food is like the country somewhere between Chinese and Indian. Dim Sum are called Momo, Indian Curries are similar to the Nepalese one's and you can always choose if you like them as they are, a bit spicy, really spicy or really hot. Two favorites of mine: lamb curry and chicken in curry-cashew nut-sauce. One of my absolute favourites, the Landtmann drips with traditional style and elegance. Not as touristy as other establishments,it obviously attracts the well heeled and well connected who obviosly come to do deals and gossip under the glimmer of the chandeliers. This might be a little off putting for some, particularly as the liveried waiters buzz with an austere efficiency that some people might find a litle intimidating - but believe me, they don't bite. The food is excellent. The sliced veal is mouthwatering, their schnitzel puts Figmuller in the shade (size isn't everything!), and the traditional half breaded chicken is marvellous. The desserts are similarly mouthwatering...and yes, they also boast a Landtmann Torte which straddles the rather delicious region between chocolate mousse and cake. Perfect!
Difficult to choose. I'll have to keep returning until I make my mind up. Leave a Comment Theme: German/AustrianPrice: US$41 and up » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Dr Karl-Lueger-Ring 4Directions: U2 Schottentor tram 1,2Website: www.landtmann.at

The tradition of the Viennese Coffehouses dates back to the 17th century when the Turks besieged Vienna. People come here for a drink or even a small meal and of course for people watching. Some of the famous Coffeehouses in Vienna are Cafe Demel, Cafe Hawelka, Cafe Central and Cafe Sacher. Even if you don't have a rest here, they are all well worth a look. Two Coffehouses that I visited for a drink and a meal are the traditional Cafe Westend and the more modern Cafe Stein. I liked them both. "Palatschinke" is the austrian name for pancake and in this restaurant you get a really wide choice of them, including one of the best "Kaiserschmarren" I ever had. This restaurant is in the very centre of Vienna, in a side-street without car-trafic and it also has tables in the street during summer !! There are 2 entrances to that restaurant : one in Koellnerhofgasse and one in Grashofgasse4 All dishes are explained in English and French as well ! The restaurant is open daily 10.00a.m.-00.00 midnight 10 minutes of Free internet for each guest !! ask for the internet-coin at the kitchen !!
Palatschinkenpfandl has a large choice of dishes, including 6-8 "Tagesmenues" with a main course + the choice of one of 5 deserts or 5 types of soup and of course you may get it also with soup+desert. Take a look at my pictures : I had a delicious pumkin-soup first (without pic) then a pan full of roasted potatoes, fried turkey&chicken & salad and for desert I had 2 pancakes, filled with sweet chestnuts and chocolate-topping. Such a "Tagesmenu" is 10,50 Euros , when you choose any soup OR desert with it ! When you choose desert PLUS soup, you pay just 12 Euros. Kaiserschmarren is my favorite meal, it is some sort of "thick pancake" with raisins and cut into small pieces - I had mine with "Zwetschken-roester" (thick plum-stew) for 7 Euros - see my main picture ! They have a total of 8 different "Kaiserschmarren" : with apples, cinnamon, poppy-seeds etc.etc.etc. For drinks you may get also Milk, milkshakes, yoghurt and some great austrian wines in addition to the ordinary soft-drinks and beers. Shortly after Mozart's death in 1791 this Coffeehouse was established in his name.
Today it is a classic Viennese Coffeehouse and restaurant, offering not only snacks but also main courses. Location Innere Stadt (Inner City) Metro: U1, U4, U2 Station: Karlsplatz Leave a Comment

Here in the UK we like to think we know a thing or two about the humble potato - thanks to the British Empire, once we'd successfully twinned the flavoursome fish with the cheery chip, our gastronomic gifts were recognised throughout the world...'er, quite! But seriously it's good honest tuck and hard to beat for a bit of alfresco dining - or so I thought until I stumbled across the Kartoffelpuffer vendors of Vienna! These delicious potato fritters are served piping hot with a simple garlic sauce brushed onto the surface. Also available are bratkartoffel (dry baked slices of potato), and maroni (hot chestnuts). From my experience the vendors are geared up to deal with people seeking a warming snack in Winter, which is another good reason why you should visit Vienna later in the year. The vendors can be found all around the city and within the various Christmas markets providing a good cheap alternative to a full blown dinner - and for those on different diets it's vegetarian friendly and (to my wife's delight) gluten free too!
It's got to be kartoffelpuffer! Leave a Comment Theme: Street VendorPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: Seek and ye shall find!Directions: Just keep your eyes - and potatoes - peeled!

Austria, believe it or not, is one of Europe's biggest advocates of organic food and this is a fine restaurants which attempts to source such produce and use them to cook delicious traditional fare. Although based in la ovely old building, CO (as I shall call it from now on) is incredibly modern inside and sports a swish 'designer' interior. The glass lift up to the first floor restaurant arguably covers one the shortest vertical distances I have ever travelled...even stepping into the driver's seat of a large 4x4 is more likely to cause vertigo! A window seat will enable you to watch the world go by in Neuer Markt, something you might crave if it's fast food you're after. For at the CO they cook from fresh ingredients and this can take time - one of their signature desserts took almost 30 mins to arrive on my plate (I was warned beforhand) but by jove was it worth it! This is one of the places you can try one of Franz Joseph's favourites, 'Tafelspitz'. Basically it's boiled beef and hardly what you'd have expected the old Emperor to tuck into, but it's good down-to-earth tasty 'peasant food'. There are of course plenty of places to try this particular dish and the same applies to their Kaiserschmarren, a rich shredded pancake with vine fruits and served with warm plum compote . To be honest, in four trips to Vienna it's the finest I've tasted. If you can't afford a trip to the restaurant, go downstairs to their café during the day and order yourself some!
Kaiserschmarren - in my opinion the best in Vienna and worth the wait! Leave a Comment Theme: German/AustrianPrice: US$41 and up » Currency ConverterComparison: most expensiveAddress: 1, Neuer Markt 10-11Directions: A very short stroll from Stephansplatz
