Located at upmarket Kohlmart Strret, the shop is across from the top international fashion labels such as Chanel, Gucci and Ferragamo. After busting your wallet - you should come here to put up the feet at least. Have a cuppa melange to wash down the many choice of tortes, strudels etc.
Plenty to take home as well, I bought 2 Demel Sacher torte which is said to be good for 2 weeks, but gets crumbly after 3-4 days once opened. The cakes are packed in a nice wooden box - mind you it is rather heavy to cart home, but it survived well in the luggage!!!

Treat yourself to pastries bar none at Demel in the heart of the inner city. And if you don't want to pay their exorbitant prices, at least walk by as they always dress their windows with beautiful marzipan sculptures. This one just blew me away, for at the time, they were renovating the outside of the building. In Canada you may see a sign by a building being renovated telling you curtly to walk on the other side of the road, but here... They apologise for the inconvenience of the renovations in the form of an ornate marzipan sculpture in the window!!

Definitely Demels. Okay, so it may be a bit of a tourist trap, but the lunches were superb, and the Sacher torte was better than Sacher's in my opinion. As you probably already know (and will quickly discover on a trip to Vienna), there is a debate between the two restaurants about which one invented Sacher Torte. Despite Demels' claims, the cake is immortalized with the name of its rivals. Considering though, that the exquisite combination of chocolate and orange must have been recognized long before either of the two restaurants were opened, both have equal rights to the claim.

The most refined retreat for cake-lovers in the city. Experience the epitome of politeness and delights that imperial guests once enjoyed. This was the other place my friend recommended.

Vienna is a city that never ceases to astound me - I still have to explore a lot of its nooks and crannies - that's one reason why I love the city as it seems to be made up of lots of smaller towns......
