The visit there is a real pleasure and culinary adventure.
It is one of oldest restaurants of Vienna and they say that it was visited by such famous people like Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert.

Favorite Dish: Me and my husband wanted to try the most typical Austrian dish which was Wiennerschnitzel and drink really good wine and we could do it there.
So if you are interested in nice historical place with really good food don't hestitate to visit Griechenbeisl.

I found this place at random, walking from my hotel to the old section of Vienna. I got a late start and they were able to seat me at 10 PM. Apparently this restaurant is in one of the oldest buildings in Vienna. While I say outside, the inside was done in classic style with dark woods and old prints on the walls. The entrees were right around 20 euro. I started with the dark beer onion soup, which was dark and full of onion flavor. For my entree I had a sirloin steak, which covered my plate but was only a 1/4 inch thick at the most, covered in sauce. The service was excellent. Total bill for one including two glasses of tasty red wine was 36 euro.

Favorite Dish: The onion soup was as good as I have tasted.

Originally we had planned to try out some more restaurants in Vienna, but the food in the Griechenbeisl was good, the tables in the garden so nice, the location so conveniently close to our hotel, that we only ate there.
Not too many vegetarian dishes can be found on the menu, but since their dessert menu is so good, no vegetarian has to stay hungry. My favourite here was the Mohnsoufflé - poppy seed soufflé, closely followed by the pancakes - Palatschinken, or maybe the apricot ice-cream dumplings? I really cannot decide, they were all so good.

This is one of Vienna's oldest restaurant, from 1447, and the song "Oh du lieber Augustin" has first been sung there. It's a song about losing just about everything, but not moaning about it, rather accepting it and keeping good spirits.

Restaurant Griechenbeisl: "The Inn of the Greek"

Griechenbeisl.

A very old house, first mentioned in documents from 1447, and has ever since been a restaurant or “a public house” under various names. It has many small vaulted rooms, upstairs and downstairs. The name “Griechenbeisl” is derived from the Greek merchants that settled in the 'Fleischmarkt' (Meat Market) and frequented this place. 'Griechenbeisl' has been the meeting place of many great artists, scientists and politicians - Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Mark Twain, Grillparzer etc. It has been proved that Mark Twain wrote his story 'The Million Dollar Note' in one of the rooms in Griechenbeisl.

Favorite Dish: Wiener schnitzel, Apfelstrudel.

Erdinger Weissbierstuberl (formerly Marhold): The same food as the Griechenbeisel

The food is served from the same kitchen as the Griechenbeisel by charming waiters and waitresses. The atmosphere is less formal and the service is much faster.

Favorite Dish: The steak is great and the Maibock (deer) extraordinary.

Griechenbeisl has a medieval structure is built on a narrow deep plot of land. The restaurant has gone by this name since the 18th century and welcomed guests like myself, Wagner, Strauss and others. A great evening outing not to be missed.

Despite the name this is a traditional Viennese restaurant next to the remnants of the old city walls. A restaurant has been on this site since 1487 or so! The food was well-prepared and presented and not all of it was heavy. A lovely, atmospheric place! The name comes from the Greek Orthodox church nearby.

Reichenberger Griechenbeisl in Fleischmarkt 11. A lovely small restaurant from the 1500 with a garden outside.
Then the Sacher cafe at the Sacher hotel, no words for describing the sacher cake....
Moderate price. But it's the atmosphere that its nice and genuine.

Favorite Dish: Different sorts of salads and ofcourse the schnitzler and the gulash.
