It is really not very easy to find some of the old, traditional Kaffeehaus in Vienna these days, but Cafe Landtmann is definitely one of the best that you will find !
It is situated opposite of the Burgtheater and when you are lucky you might find some (local) celebrities there as well.
Some time ago they had this funny sculpture of a horse dressed as a waiter in front of their Cafe, I am not sure if that is still there !
Favorite Dish: I normally take a "Grosser Brauner" and a cake, it is hard to say which cake is my favorite, but Apfelstrudel is always a great choice there !
This coffee house used to be frequented by Sigmund Freud, amongst others and is a great place to meet friends for a late breakfast or early lunch. The website has a reasonable amount of information about opening times, photos and their souvenir shop.
You should give Café Landtmann a try if you want to have a genuine Viennese coffee house experience. The Café Landtmann is an elegant coffee house and it has been in business since 1873. It is located next to the Burgtheater on the Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Ring road. Café Landtmann serves quite a large variety of beverages and different versions of coffee, tea and hot chocolate as well as excellent quality cakes and sweets. They also serve superb warm Viennese dishes.
Recently (early 2007), they have added a Wintergarden (a glass-enclosed outdoor seating area) next to the Restaurant/Café. If you can get a table there, it is wonderful to have hot coffee on a cold winter's day, while sitting in the Wintergarden room and watching snow falling gently around you. Fantastic experience!

I am surprised to see that the others have commented only about the fabulous coffees and pastries at this restaurant - when that aspect of this restaurant is just a small portion of what is offered there. The spaces to enjoy your experience are as varied as the 150 year history of this restaurant. There is the sophisticated outdoor terrace, the glass covered atrium and then several plush rooms inside of the restuarant, each authentically celebrating a design era - such as the Art Deco room and the Beidermeier room available. The menu changes with the seasons and is a very current and savvy compilation of what is happening now in world class cuisine, at the same time remaining true to the Austrian German roots of the culture and the establishment created by their Executive Chef, Alec Lugonja. Everything we ate there during our stay this summer was outstanding, and not only was each dish plated with flare, each included an unexpected surprise element that moved a traditional classic to a spectacular culinary experience. The service was formal, yet friendly, and well paced. The ambiance eclectic, and dependent upon where you choose to eat in the establishment. An absolute highlight of our six week European Tour this summer! A definite "must" while there.

and the list was much longer (there was also list of Hot Chocolate specialities and tea specialities), so enough to choose . . .
Of course with the coffee you need something sweet, there was a display case showing cakes and pastry all prepared by there own gourmet pastry Chef.

Favorite Dish: A deliscious Strudl and a Wiener Melange
Before leaving for Vienna, we had contacted fellow VT'er alusru (Ursula) to see if she wanted to meet us for lunch one day. Wow, we all hit it off so well that we ended up meeting her a number of other times around the city...such a great, wonderful, lovely and awesome person. Now, back to Café Landtmann...established by Franz Landtmann in 1873, is one of Vienna's most elegant cafés...yes you can call it a Viennese Institution. Many famous people have dined here to include many VT'ers...lol...a perfect location to sit back and relax, read the paper or even people watch. All pastries are hand baked in the family bakery following old, handed-down recipes and using fresh ingredients.
Favorite Dish: As mentioned earlier, we met Ursula for lunch/dessert...we shared both the Topfenstrudel/Quark strudel (hand-made strudel dough rolled with fine quark cream and baked golden brown) and Apfelstrudel/Apple strudel (Hofbackstube apples, cinnamon, butter, breadcrumbs, raisins rolled and baked golden brown) with 2 cups of Wiener Mélange.
One of my absolute favourites, the Landtmann drips with traditional style and elegance. Not as touristy as other establishments,it obviously attracts the well heeled and well connected who obviosly come to do deals and gossip under the glimmer of the chandeliers. This might be a little off putting for some, particularly as the liveried waiters buzz with an austere efficiency that some people might find a litle intimidating - but believe me, they don't bite.
The food is excellent. The sliced veal is mouthwatering, their schnitzel puts Figmuller in the shade (size isn't everything!), and the traditional half breaded chicken is marvellous. The desserts are similarly mouthwatering...and yes, they also boast a Landtmann Torte which straddles the rather delicious region between chocolate mousse and cake. Perfect!
Favorite Dish: Difficult to choose. I'll have to keep returning until I make my mind up.
They serve delicious food before or after consert or theater.
It is not easy to find a table and serves was slow, I think because of all tables were full.
Favorite Dish: I tried a kind of omlet and it was something sweet :-)
My wife and I really enjoyed this cafe. It was a welcomed break from me dragging her around the ringtrasse. The Hot Chocolate was excellent and I thought the Sacher torte here was as good as the original. (It had been a mission of mine to try and compare a slice of Sache torte in every coffehouse that we stopped in, someone had to do it). The pastry selection was good, and the servers were nice. We did not feel rushed and had a good experience here.
