Wein & Co: Wines from all over the world
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wines from all over the world, where the shop assistants can help you choosing the right one. You can taste and talk about the wines and get what you really want. But also fruit schnapps, spirits, liquors, vinegars, pasta, pasta sauces - everything of high quality. And of course coffee beans, chocolate, coffee-sets, glasses for wine, beer, schnapps, champagne and so on.

For me that shop is especially for the real Specialities from Italy (pasta, pesto and so on) and for these special wines, when you cook a great dinner for friends and need the right wine to each of the dishes, toning with all the ingredients you are cooking with.

I know Australian wines, you get at a lower price in Vienna than in Melbourne!

Marc&Ella Shop started as an e-bay-shop and recently Marcella opened her 1st "real" shop, where you may go to and choose yourself umong the offers. Buying in the internet is still possible, and many customers still prefer it that way, but others prefer to try it on first in the shop.

Ladies-Fashion and accessories untill XXXL / size 64

You may check prices first at her web-page !

Meinl am Graben: Vienna's equivalent of Fortnum & Mason
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bored of Billa? Spar's staid? Merkur's middle of the road? Well then for the luxury antidote to supermarket shopping in Vienna, there is Meinl am Graben. To a certain extent there is very little to choose between Meinl am Graben and Sapr and Billa - after all they are all owned by the same company! However, there is substantially more to Meinl am Graben than everyday foods - their range of fresh meat, fish and also cheeses is hard to surpass in Vienna elsewhere - other than by going to the Naschmarkt. It also has its own wine bar, which has a great selection of wines to try and fine nibbles. There is also a sushi stand and a coffee bar - well there would have to be in Vienna, wouldn't there. Prices for staple goods might be a touch higher than at other supermarkets, but the range and assortment of products is also far greater. It is also about the only place to still issue Meinl shopping bags - nearly all the other Meinl's are now Spar's.

I come here for wines - the selection is comparable to that of Wein & Co. but there is more fun to be had by wine shopping at Meinl am Graben. Otherwise fine Zotter chocolate is one of the things I tend to have a soft spot for!

It depends on your tastes, but if you are a foodie and have withdrawal symptoms you could end up damaging your credit card.

The pleasure of window shopping for things you cannot afford is only surpassed by the thrill of realising that you might just be able to buy them. It's unlikely happen in this case though! Strolling down Wollzeile one evening, we came across a rather swish shop selling watches, clocks, jewellery etc My eye was drawn to this rather extraordinary timepiece in the window. Not particularly pretty, in fact not really to my taste at all. Even so, I was fascinated to see that the dial on the timepiece stretched all the way to the year 3000! After much delving I later discovered that this was Jaeger le Coultre's 'Atmos du Millénaire', an extraordinary bit of mechanical engineering powered purely by fluctuations in temperature and guaranteed to outlive both it's owner and a good many of his ancestors. Needless to say, no price was visible in the window and I wasn't able to find a price online either - I doubt they're embarrassed because it's so cheap and affordable!

I dread to think! Probably not a good idea to put it in the kids bedroom and I wouldn't want to be the one who dropped it at 11.59 pm on the 31st December 2999!

    Fleamarket on the Donaukanal
  • Tip Rating:
  • A Saturday morning fleamarket by the Donau. It seemed extremely popular, but I resisted as I already had enough to carry in my rucksack.

Anything! All kinds of things on sale here - trash and treasure.

    You could try haggling.

    Christmas Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • I love Vienna's Christmas markets, especially the one in front of the Schoenbrunn Palace. Some of my favorite things are: the fried potatoes made on the spot, the crepes made on the spot, the handmade Christmas tree ornaments, the wood carvings, and the hand blown glass ornaments. Or perhaps I am just a sucker for buying things I don't need. Still, we went to the market on Christmas night and there was a band set up and everything. So festive...

Beim HundertwasserHaus: Arty Crafty Nick Nacky things
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was a souvenir shop selling all kinds of things related to the famous Haus acoss the street - postcards, posters, calendars, mugs, jewellery etc etc.

I bought a really nice calendar with photos of the HundertwasserHaus taken on each month of the year. They also sell stamps for Europe here too.

The calendar was about 9E but there were bigger ones for 12-14E.

  • Well, there are plenty of stores where you can buy this stuff but if you like some stylish way I recommend to buy it somewhere on the main streets in specialized sweets shops. There is a lot of other zummmie stuff such as marzipan, nougat, thousands of chocolate bonbons etc .. but you must buy also some Moyart stuff, it is going together with Vienna or Salzburg :) so go and buy Mozart tallers (Mozart plates) or Mozartkugeln (we famililarly call them Mozart balls :))) yummie yummie mmm

Billa is a cheap and cheerful supermarket chain. It comes into its own though for purchasing Mozart balls and assorted chocolates - the prices are much lower than in the tourist shops or at the airport - most Billas offer the whole range of Mozart Ball products, and Milka chocolate at reasonable rates. Similarly coffee is also reasonably priced - whether Meinl, Illy or other brands. Some Billa stores are decidedly run down looking, but others have been given a good refit and include delis, rotisserie and fresh juice pressing services.

Mozart Balls Mozart Thalern Milka chocolate Coffee

Normal supermarket prices - a considerable saving over tourist souvenir shop prices.

Demmers Teehaus: Tea in the City of Coffee
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most people associate Vienna with coffee, which can be a problem if you are a tea drinker - especially as Austrian tea doesn't tend to be the same strength or taste quite the same as British teas. If, however, you are after a seriously good tea shop, then you can do far worse than Demmer's Tea Shop. They have all sorts of different kinds of teas - various black teas, fruit infusions and Rooibos tea, all available loose and of course to top it all off there are traditional English biscuits (shortbread, hob nobs etc).

English Rose Tea - like a Rose Pouchong!

Bags of tea from EUR 3 upwards
