  • Bailoni is a company making schnaps and liqueurs from apricots, that in Austria are called Marillen.

The Schnaps are distilled, so their concentration of alcohol is high: 40%. It is not sweet (all the sugar has turned to alcohol!) and the apricot can be felt only in the flavour. The liqueur, instead, is sweet, however its contents of alcohol is not so low: 30%. There is no risk of mistaking one for the other: the liqueur is gold-yellow, and the schanps colourless like vodka.

  • Augarten are the most famous porcelain manufacturer in Vienna, from the 18th century.

A tea-set or a dinner-set of the best china are not exactly the ideal buys when travelling far from home. But a small decorative object, for instance a heart-shaped pill-box, has good possibilities of travelling safely, if carefully packed. So if you like to display in your home some souvenirs from your travels, and you have good taste, Augarten may have something that suits you.

These are de-luxe items, so you can expect to pay over 60 euro even for a small object. Ashtrays come cheaper.

    Michaela Frey: Decorative art
  • Tip Rating:
  • The concept behind the Michaela Frey boutiques is to get inspiration from art to create jewels.

I like especially the collection "Hommage a Gustav Klimt" because Klimt himself was a supporter of decorative arts. The enamelled jewels, however, are not the only things inspired by Klimt's works. The boutiques sell also accessories such as silk scarves and neckties.

  • The Hotel Sacher has also a shop to sell the famous Sachertorte and other delicatessen. It is possible also to buy online.

Those who have enjoyed the Sachertorte in the cafes of Vienna can bring home one, or more. It is available in four sizes, from Piccolo to Size III (the number of portions is respectively 4, 6, 9 or 12). The Torte is sold in a nice wooden box that will keep it safe during the journey. It can last for up to 21 days.

The prices range from EUR 17.50 for a Piccolo to 34.00 for a Size III.

Theyer & Hardtmuth: From Mont Blanc to exquisite business cards
  • Tip Rating:
  • Theyer & Hardtmuth on Kärntnerstrasse is one of Vienna's best known stationers and its bespoke printing service is used by the rich and famous - for invitations, business cards, and the like. There is usually a selection of their business card designs and invitations on display in the window. The ground floor is their Mont Blanc showroom, whilst the cellar is a far more down-to-earth stationers - pens and paper from far least exclusive brands, filofax refills etc. abound. And they have a relatively good selection of English birthday cards. Their reputation goes before them to such an extent that they do not require a website!

For exquisite stationery in Austria there is no other choice!

From €1 for a card to several thousand Euro for a Mont Blanc fountain pen!

    H & M
  • Tip Rating:
  • Oh my goodness, I LOVE H & M! I went in once and came out with about three garbage bags (not literally) full of clothes for about $50. I bought sweaters, black wool pants (still my favorite pants of all time), a dress, skirts, shirts...I go nuts every time I go in there. Sure, the quality isn't that great, but it's cheap and if you want something in the current style you could do a lot worse. Just be warned-the lines to the dressing rooms are extraordinarily long.

    the whole street: Karnterstrasse
  • Tip Rating:
  • the main shopping street is the Karnterstrasse and this is a pedestrianized street. Apart from the shops and restaurants there are fruitjuice stands and flower stands and often street musicians. It is always busy, it was part of the main highway to Carinthia in Medieval times.

chocolate, CD's, clothing is very good quality and so are shoes.

clothes are a bit more expensive than in The Netherlands but I think the quality is much better.

    Shopping by necessity
  • Tip Rating:
  • As I mentioned in some earlier tips we lost part of our luggage on this trip. This caused us to have to shop out of necessity. It was kind of fun though working with the various stores and the clerks. We had to figure out what sizes we needed on the European labels compared to the sizes we have on our clothing labels here in the US. We had to learn words for "under wear", toothbrush, etc. It was fun and educational for us. Is best to make the most of a bad situation.

If you want to get clothes from H&M, Schopps, Vero Moda, Zara, Mango or Peek and Cloppenburg, or look for a CD at Virgin Megastore, Cosmos or Saturn, if you want to eat icecream, bizzi pizza or McDonalds, if you want to buy furniture, jewellrey or souvenirs, guidebooks from Amadeus, children's toys from Muller, designer clothes, book a holiday........try Mariahilferstrasse, in fact this is the best shopping in Vienna with lots of cafes in between (U2 - Museumsquartier, U3 Neubaugasse, Zieglergasse or Westbahnhof (also U6), 2a, 13a or 14a buses, trams 16 or 18 to Westbahnhof). Its a great shopping trip out but don't forget the shops close at 17:00 on Saturdays and don't forget the cafes along the street and on top of the Gerngross department store!!
