The Innere Stadt is a connection of history, tradition, art, religion, and architecture. This magical place has been designated, since 2001, a World Heritage site. It is the most popular walking place in the city. The aged edifices of here are very important for the history from Austria and from the whole world. The Innere Stadt is a real open-air museum. Though Freyung is described as a square in the guide books it is not in fact square at all. Platz would probably be a better name for its irregular almost triangular space. Either way, for me this is the most charming square in Vienna, with the huge Shotttenstift, ( the benedictine monastery I stayed in ) on one side, the Schottenkeller and Schottengasse on the other and a line of wonderful Baroque palaces opposite. One of these palaces is Palais Kinsky which you enter through a courtyard from the street. To the left, opposite the restaurant and gallery, theres a door which seems to be always open and which you can wander through without any admission fee or hassle. The staircase you climb up is unbelievably elegant and stylised and then at the top there is a perfect frescoed ceiling. This palace was designed by Lukas Van Hildebrandt and is considerd to be one of his masterpieces. Returning to the square, the word Freyung means asylum and got it's name from the Benedictine tradition of sheltering fugitives from the law. Traditionally this was a lively market square and the practice of Christmas Markets has now been introduced here. Freyung's market is one of the most atmospheric in Vienna as it is a small space and just allows for a cosy number of stalls, plus gluhwien and hot chestnut and food stands. The stalls sell mostly, baskets, wooden ornaments and toys, glass, ceramics and other crafts. In the evenings a blanket of mulled wine and hot food fumes drifts over everything and with the huge monastery looming behind, there's a definite medieval air. Phone: 532 4200 (Palais Kinsky)Directions: Freyung is next to Herrengasse and the Hofburg on one side and Am-Hof and Stephansplatz on the other. It is very central. U-bahn 2 to Schottentor brings you really close to Freyung as do Trams 1 and 2Website: www.Vienna.info

Maria-Theresia-Platz is the large park between Naturhistorisches and Kunsthistorisches Museum with a great monument in the centre and a beautiful park with plenty of benches around it. Kaspar von Zumbusch created the monument with empress Maria-Theresia sitting on her throne, surrounded by her best generals, sitting on their horses. The persons standing around of her throne are her noble counsellors and her doctor van Swieten . Take a closer look at all the beautiful street-lamps at the square : all of them have a royal cown on top ! The palm house in the castle garden is one of the biggest orange reams of Europe. It was created into the year 1901 after the plans of the architect Friedrich Ohmann. The construction from steel and glass is an important part of the Burggarten and a quiet oasis in the city. Now, it lodges the butterfly house and a tropical rain wood. The present building of the University was created in style of the Italian renaissance in the year 1883, after the plans of the architect Heinrich Ferstel. The imposing stairways in the lobby lead to the immense halls of the university. The beautiful arcade of the main yard is decorated with monuments of the most famous university teachers and with statues of Sigmund Freud and of the philosopher Franz Brentano. The hallways are hangs with posters, of the present-day students, hangs. On the walls of the hallways, hang many posters with the names of the current students of the University. Approximately 50 000 students participate today at the courses in the University of Vienna. Leave a Comment Directions: Station: Schottentor Metro: U2 Tram: 1, 2, DWebsite: www.univie.ac.at

The Palais Kinsky was built in Baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century. With its large-scale stucco decorations and ceiling paintings it is probably one of the most elegant Palais buildings in Austria. Palais Kinsky was constructed by Lukas von Hildebrandt for Count Daun who was one of the four military advisors of Maria Theresia. Leave a Comment Directions: The Palais Kinsky is located at Freyung 4, which can be found right in heart of Vienna.

If you keep your eyes at street level, you can easily miss things! One such example is the facade that is on the building located at Kärntnerstrasse 16 in the first district of Vienna - well worth stopping for a few moments to take it in. Pestsaule by Jmill42 The Pestsaue, or Plague Column, is a Baroque sculpture given to the city by Leopold I. He gave this during the Great Plague of 1679. It is the most eye-catching structure on Graben, which is full of eye-catching things. Designed in the structure are beautiful angels on clouds and a trinity sculpture at the top. There were three artists that created the structure: Burnacini created the cloud obelisk, von Erlach the base reliefs and Strudel the sculptures. There is meaning in the carvings at the base: “Faith defeats the plague”. Leave a Comment Directions: On Graben

Vienna's most famous monument - Strauss in gold by Henkster Vienna offers beautiful gardens, but no large park in the center. The Stadtpark park was opened in 1862 and is embellished by water courses and a small lake. Among the numerous monuments the golden statue of Johann Strauss is the most photographed. Leave a Comment

Graben by Jmill42 The Graben dates back to Roman times. The street was originally a ditch for the Roman Army. Looking, and smelling, much better these days, the Graben now has 3 main attractions: the Trattberhof (former home of Mozart in 1784, the Ankerhaus built by Otto Wagner, and the Pestäule (Column of the Black Plague) donated by the emperor Leopold I. during the terrible plague epidemic of 1679. The stores and shops that line the Graben are a great treasure trove of small souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, and other local creations. Leave a Comment
