In the Wiener Hofburg (Schweizerhof, 1010 Wien) you will find the Schatzkammer of Vienna. This museum has one of the most important collections of splendor and representation objects. The dark rooms with all the gold and diomonds are spectacular for kids to see. Particularly worth seeing are the Emperor crown of the holy Roman realm (around 962) house crown of the Habsburger and/or Austrian emperor crown (1602) treasure of the medal of the golden fleece Burgunderschatz (15th century) Leave a Comment

It's a good idea to take the subway to "Stephansplatz" visit the Stephansdom (check out my tip) and after that stroll around in the 1st district. You will find lots of different shops, restaurants, bars and so on. It's also very interesting to sit in one of the "street-facing" cafés and watch the people pass by. This can be very relaxing after a hard shopping trip. Leave a Comment Directions: Subway station "Stephansplatz"

Maria Theresien Denkmal (Maria Theresia Memorial) is really impressive with its bronze figures. It was made in 1874-1888 to honour Empress Maria Theresia, a very popular monarch who introduced many reforms (schooling became compulsory, the Universities became State Institutions, etc.) and who had 16 children (11 daughters and 5 sons). My information about several churches, smaller monuments, unknown places that still deserve your attention, can be found under the "Off the beaten path"-tips on this Vienna page. Within the main shopping streets one finds the strange statue on the added picture. This is the "Pest Saule" (Plague Column) that was errected after the plague was overcome in late medieval times in gratitude to God for his mercy. Leave a Comment

Named Schmetterlinghaus this is a big greenhouse right near the opera. Inside there is one of the biggest butterfly house - numerous butterflies you can see, feel and take pictures with. Affordable price for entry, only EUR 5.5 the full price, EUR 2.50 for children under 16. Leave a Comment

On our way to Belvedere Palace, we passed the Russian Heroes' Monument. This was a "gift" from the Russian people to the citizens of Vienna commemorating the liberation of Austria from the Nazis. Allied bombing was heavy in Vienna in the last two years of WWII and most major public buildings were damaged or destroyed. at the end of the war, the city was divided into four zones...controlled by the Americans, English, French and Russians (something which I didn't know). After the Allies went home, only the Russians left this monument as a source of pride. Funny, the Viennese aren't all that happy about this so the upkeep is minimal at best...but what does add beauty to the area is the water from Hochstrahlbrunnen (a fountain commemorating the installation of the city's main water system in 1873). Leave a Comment Directions: Located at the southern end of Schwarzenbergplatz in the 1st District (near the French Embassy).

Rathaus (City Hall) is the seat of the City Council Chamber, the Red Hall, the People's Hall, the Mayor's Office, the Municipal Library and the Archives of the City of Vienna. It was designed by Friedrich Schmidt and built between 1872 and 1883. It has 4 over 61m high towers and a 98m central tower with the 3m tall copper 'Knight of the City Hall' ('Eisener Rathausmann').
