1.Bezirk / 1st district: Schmetterlinghaus- The Butterfly House
  • Tip Rating:
  • The palm house in the castle garden is one of the biggest orange reams of Europe. It was created into the year 1901 after the plans of the architect Friedrich Ohmann. The construction from steel and glass is an important part of the Burggarten and a quiet oasis in the city. Now, it lodges the butterfly house and a tropical rain wood.

Vienna offers beautiful gardens, but no large park in the center. The Stadtpark park was opened in 1862 and is embellished by water courses and a small lake. Among the numerous monuments the golden statue of Johann Strauss is the most photographed.

1.Bezirk / 1st district: Statue of Maria Theresa
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well, but back to the park. Central statue as the name of the square evocates is Empress Maria Theresa and her "men of cabinet such as Swieten, Kaunitz, Liechteinstein, Haugwitz"and sitting on horses you can see statues of dukes Duan, Laudon, Traun and Khevenhuller. The whole object is work of sculptor Kabol on request of Emperor Franz Josef I. The statue was revealed in 1887.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Maria Theresa Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is really one of my favourite in Vienna. There is a baroque garden (or park) situated between two identical buildings. Boths are museums, on your right side (if you are coming from the direction of Hofburg) there is Museum of history and nature with great collections of historic animal species, rocks etc etc. and on your left side there is a Museum of Art. It is must see :) but take good shoes because your feet will strike after so long walk there. You can send there hours and hours.

  • I have read somewhere that what St. Marco square is for Venice, that is Graben for Vienna. Well, I'm not sure if such comparison can be done. It is most central pedestrian zone of Vienna, square that connects Kaertner strasse, Stepansplatz, Kohlmarkt and even Am Hof via narrow Naglergasse. There is interesting statue there. Graben gets decorated during winter with some punch stands (try Lion's), but it is often too crowdy during weekends. Still it lacks to give me atmosphere I expect from Vienna.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Burgtheater im Kasino
  • Tip Rating:
  • Archduke Ludwig Viktor was the youngest brother of Emperor Franz Joseph. In 1863 he decided to build this palace; the architect was Heinrich von Ferstel, famous after the erection of the Votivkirche. The palace, modeled on the style of the Italian Renaissance, was finished in 1869. Nowadays, this building houses the second stage of Vienna (200 places).

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Palais Ferstel
  • Tip Rating:
  • The magnificent Palais Ferstel is located in one of the oldest parts of Vienna. Inspired by a long journey to Italy, the young architect Heinrich von Ferstel created one of the city?s most interesting 19th-century edifices between 1856?1860, architecturally combining ashlar construction and Venetian-Florentine trecento style. When it was inaugurated back in 1860, Palais Ferstel was hailed the "most modern building in Vienna". For a short time it housed the Vienna Stock Exchange and the Austro-Hungarian Central Bank. It boasted stylish rooms, a glass-covered inner courtyard and the perfect spot for the Cafe Central, which became the focal point of Vienna and Europe's intellectual elite at the close of the 19th century. Today, Palais Ferstel's perfect blend of architectural styles gives the venue its refreshing symbiosis of impressively classic ambience and state-of-the-art installations. Lavishly faithful revitalisation and restoration work, taking in every last detail, have left the building splendidly radiant, while optimally incorporating the infrastructures essential to modern event facilities. Plague Column, Graben,

It’s an old square called “Graben” (Fortress Moat) and surrounded by buildings in so called “Jugendstil” with Holy Trinity Column (Dreifaltigkeitssaul) in the center. The column dates back to the end of the 17th century when the city was suffering from plague. The monument was erected in the reign of the emperor Leopold I as a sign of gratefulness for the end of the devastating plague epidemics in the city in 1679. You can see three angels, numerous other figures and statues and the statue of the kneeling emperor Leopold I who is thanking Heavens for the end of the plaque nightmare. People call that column simply “Plague Column".

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Plague Pillar
  • Tip Rating:
  • The plague of 1699 cost 75,000 Vienese their lives. Their theology was such that the plague was viewed as divine punishment. Emperor Leopold I swore that when the plague ended he would pay to erect a pillar "which would reach up to the heavens." Presumably it is to honor the dead, teach people to be righteous and thank God for having survived.

  • Across from St. Stephan's cathedral, on the corner of the Graben and Stephansplatz, stands the Haas House. This shiny chrome and glass building is very interesting among the complete different style of other buildings around
