  • Karntner Straze starts from Opera and curved down to Stephans Pltz. It is one of the most visited places, all the time full with thousands of tourist. It is one of the must see activity when you are in Vienna. There are verities of shops and restaurant and cafes on both sides of this street.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Altes Rathaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • This complex of buildings used to be the property of Otto and Haymo of Neuburg. It was confiscated in 1309 when the German brothers comspired to overthrow the Habsburgs. Until 1883 the buildings were used as the city hall or Rathaus. The entrance is decorated with beautiful ornamental ironwork. Nowadays the building houses offices and shops. There is also the Austrain Resistance Archive, which is open monday, wednesday and thursday. A minority of the Austrians resisted Hitler's takeover of the country in 1938 and here is an exhibition about them. Sorry but I have to replace my old photos next visit!

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Pestsaule
  • Tip Rating:
  • Emperor Leopold I vowed to celebrate the city's deliverance from the plague of 1679. When the plague was over he commissioned Matthias Rauchmiller, Lodovico Burnacini and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to build this Baroque plague column. It shows a saintly figure and an angel supervising the destruction og a hag (this represents the plague) and above the Emperor is praying. J.B. Fischer von Erlach lived 1656 -1723 and he designed many of Vienna's best buildings including Schonbrunn Palace. He died before the Karlskirche was completed and this was finished by his son in 1737.

1.Bezirk / 1st district: Rathaus from the nearby park
  • Tip Rating:
  • As you head to Rathaus - City Hall you can go two ways. There is a nearby park right next to the Parliament and mostly tourists walk down the street directly to see Rathaus. But better is to walk through park, you should see Rathaus through green leaves and it is really worth to see :)

  • One of the best streets I liked in Vienna was Karnter Ring. It leads to Opera and it has such a beautiful look. It is really wide and very impressive as the buildings on both sides make it more charming. You can also get some tram from Karntner Ring.

This beautiful park is in the centre of Vienna not far from the city hall (Rathaus) and the theatre (Burgtheater). You will find a cafe as well as one of Vienna's better quality discos and a summertime bar. Its a great place to read a book and enjoy the sunshine or if you like roses to sit in the garden area near the statue of Austrian playwright Grillparzer. In the centre of the park is the Theseus Temple which sometimes houses exhibitions - at the moment an excellent one on the bridge in Mostar.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Stock im Eisen
  • Tip Rating:
  • Stock im Eisen is a medieval mythical landmark of Vienna, first mentioned in 1533, part of a tree trunk with an iron band wrapped around it, densely studded with nails. It stands at the corner of the Karntner Strasse and Graben.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Am Hof
  • Tip Rating:
  • Square Am Hof is he oldest part of Vienna and in my opinion one of the most beautiful squres. Church Am Hof is well worth visiting. Some of the street manifestations and open concerts take place here. It is worth to explore narrow streets to the northeast of Am Hof around church and towards Judenplatz and Petersplatz.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Pestsaule ~ Plague Column
  • Tip Rating:
  • The baroque Plague Column was originally a wooden one- it is replaced to a marble one. It is also called the Holy Trinity column (note the gilded copper top) and was erected by Emperor Leopold I in thanskgiving after the fulfilment of an oath he made during the plague epidemic in 1679 and I think this must have been the first. (Vienna was hit by several plagues from 1670s to mid 1700s) Also worthy to note is that there are similar plague column over much of Austria; we saw one at Baden which intrigued me more.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Schwedenplatz
  • Tip Rating:
  • Though not beautiful, this square at the northern edge of Ringstrasse represents important traffic point and starting point for many places. Bermuda triangle with numerous pubs is just around the corner. Here you can take a tram for Augarten or Hundertwasser haus (or just walk there as some people do ;) ), or walk towards Stephansdom. There is also small Danube channel there (well, not that small because quite large ships can sail through). Sometimes there are parties on these ships, but Schwedenplatz is certainly not pleasant place during the night.
