1.Bezirk / 1st district: Maria Theresien Denkmal (Maria Theresa Monument)
  • Tip Rating:
  • This monument is dedicated to the Empress Maria Theresa; it was built by Karl Hasenauer and Kaspar Zumbusch in 1887. Maria Theresa (1717-1780) was Archduchess of Austria and ruler of the Austrian Habsburg dominions from 1740 to 1780. She succeeded her father, Emperor Charles VI, by the Pragmatic Sanction, but was challenged by neighboring powers in the War of the Austrian Succession (1741-1748), losing Silesia to Prussia but securing the imperial title for her husband, Francis I. Her rule was generally benign and moderately reformist. After the death of Francis (1765) she ruled jointly with her son, Emperor Joseph II.

This impressive building is located on the Ringstrasse opposite the city hall (Rathaus). It has been recently restored and you can see statues of world famous playwrights along the front of the fassade, from Shakespeare to Moliere to Grillparzer. What is playing that evening is always hung outside on a huge sign. There are guided tours every afternoon at 14:00 and 15:00 in English and German To find out what is on see the website. (summer break is July and August).

It is here at this location the Graben is found and it is where the centre of city life was during the Middle Ages. For many centuries it was a food market but now it is dominated by buildings, both modern, neo classical style etc. Also near here is the Plague Column... The picture is of a modern building set among many many classical buidling. This is the Haas Haus

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Ankeruhr ~ Anker Clock
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nearby to the fountain, is the famous Anker Clock. You should get there at 12 noon to see the variety of statues representing important Austrian historical personages march out. it is located near the Anker insurance company, over a Gothic arch. The arch itself is also lovely to look at. And nearby is the wedding - nuptial fountain.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Famous streets : Grabenstrasse
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Grabenstrasse is one of the most fascinating pedestrian areas in Vienna. There are many imposing buildings, statues, shops (clothing, shoes, jewellery), coffee houses, restaurants. A distinct sight is Pestsaule, a column erected by Fischer von Erlach.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Haas Haus
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a modern building directly opposite the Staphansdom. You can ask if it was really necessary to put this modern building there but in fact I think you can get some lovely reflective photos of the Dom in its glass - although that is perhaps not the reason it was buillt there! The design is by one of Austrian's leading architects Hans Hollien. The glass and green blue marble is asymmetrical and it curves around into the graben. will get a photo next time as I only have an older photo and my scanner has broken!!

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Haas Haus
  • Tip Rating:
  • This office building was erected between 1987-1990 by the Austrian architect Hans Hollein; he designed the new structure of the building, formerly used as a furniture and interior decorating store by Philipp Haas & Sons, who gave the building their name Haas Haus stands in the heart of the city, in the shadow of some of Vienna's oldest and greatest architectural masterpieces. So the intrusion of a modern glass-and-concrete building met with resistance. The facade is mostly glass, and reflects the mighty Stephansdom across the way. Instead of stark rows of stone, the lower floors are asymmetrical, and blocks of marble jut out from the building at odd angles. The result is a modern building housing offices, restaurants and shops without ruining the old-world feel of Stephansplatz.

If you are in Vienna in the summer don't miss out on the chance to watch some of the street entertainers. Sometimes the music or act is amazing. You will find them around Stephansplatz and Graben right in the heart of Vienna. There are a few regular entertainers from opera singers to people dressed up as statues, among my favourites are a guy with a puppet who plays along to the music (watch the puppets eyes!) and a group of young people who do all sorts of breakdancing. I've also had the chance to take part in some arabic dancing and see people juggle with fire! The musicians in the picture were only passing through but their music was absolutely captivating!

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Neuer Markt
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the squares I enjoyed more in Vienna, full of elegant buildings and, at the centre a fountain. The person who paid Mr. Donnel to make the fountain was a cheap payer, so the artist had its revenge pointing one of the statue' ass on his windows(enlarge the picture to see it)

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Grabenstrasse - Pestsaule (Plague Column)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Plague Column (Pestsaule) was erected in 1693 (work by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, Ludovico Ottavio Burnacini and Paul Strudel) at the behest of the Emperor Leopold I to mark the emergence of the city from the disastrous plague of 1679.
