The Freyung is a square in the north of the first district not far from Schottentor where you will often find organic farmers markets, Easter and Advent markets and other Austrian markets. The square is bordered by the Schottenkirche which means Scottish church but was actually built by Irish monks (people got confused by the Latin name for Ireland). Just across from the Freyung is the Palais Ferstel, a beautiful shopping palace which leads through to the delicious apple strudel at the famous Cafe Central.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: The Graben street
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Graben, in the heart of the city, is one of Vienna?s most distinguished business streets, located next to the Kohlmarkt and the KarntnerstraBe. In the center of the Graben stands the Pestsaule (Plague Pillar), made in 1687 by Bernhard Fischer van Erlach. Leopold I had this pillar erected in memory of the devastation of the plague, which ended in 1679. Both fountains on either side of the Plague Pillar were constructed by Johann Martin Fischer in 1804. On the corner of the Graben and the KarntnerstraBe is located the "stock im Eisen" (Stick in the Iron). This is a tree trunk full of hundred of nails, which was supposedly crafted as a masterpiece by a locksmith with the aid of the devil. The name "graben" ("moat") comes from the fortress moat which was located on this site from Roman times until the mid 12th century.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Vienna's Rathaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • The City Hall (Rathaus in German) is one of many splendid (architecturally speaking) buildings in Vienna. It was built in a neo-Gothic style, with towers similar to gothic cathedrals, by Friedriech von Schimdt between 1872 and 1883. This 321 feet building is the most important secular work of this style in the city. Today the City Hall is the head office of Vienna's municipal administration including the office of the mayor of the city of Vienna, that of the governor of the province of Vienna, the assembly and the city council. More than 2000 people work in the building. Visitors are impressed by the wonderful appointments of the state rooms, which often provide an atmospheric backdrop to various events such as press conferences, concerts, meetings, or balls. Inside the Rathaus you can also visit the Rathaus tower (steeple) with it's 331 stairs and sitting atop the tower is the Rathausmann (statue of a medieval knight). The Rathaus also houses a small park known as the Rathauspark. Rathauspark was intended as a city park for Viennese residents. The square is used year round for various events, such as the traditional Christkindlmarkt, new year's eve festivities, some of the best ice-skating (starting in January), and summer cinema. The park derives much of its character from the highly varied selection of vegetation, some of which is exotic. Guided tours are available.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Anker Uhr
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Anker Uhr - so called because it was paid for by the Anker-Versicherungsgesellschaft (Anker insurance - now Helvetia) is located on Vienna's oldest square - the Hoher Markt. It portrays twelve historical characters - ranging from Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Emperor when Vindobona (Vienna) was first a Roman settlement, through to Joseph Haydn. The clock strikes every quarter of an hour with a special "display" on the striking of the hours. It is a very popular attraction with tourists and worth timing your visit to see it strike the hour.

1.Bezirk / 1st district: STOCK IM EISEN PLATZ
  • Tip Rating:
  • This corner of Stephansplatz is where local craftsmen supposedly banged a nail into a wooden trunk during their visit to Vienna. Its surrounded by plastic and difficult to photograph but has an interesting history!

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Albertina
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Albertina used to be a Habsburg living quarter and it is built on one of the old bastions of Vienna. You will notice it for its architecture and for the large statue outside. The Archduchess Marie-Christine and the Archduke Karl (who defeated Napoleon at Aspern) used to live here. When coming from the Stephen’s cathedral, the Albertina is the first Hofburg building that you’ll encounter. In the Albertina you can now visit a very famous graphic collection, which has more than 1 million prints and 60,000 drawings. This collection was founded by the Duke Herzog Albert of Saxe-Teschen, and among others you can see works of Dürer, Klimt, Schiele, Cézanne and Picasso. If you are into photography then this place is for you, as you can also see some fine photos of Helmut Newton.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: GRABEN
  • Tip Rating:
  • Leading off of Stephansplatz towards the Hofburg palace is the Graben street. Some of the most exclusive city centre residences are above the shops in this street. At the end pay a visit to the Julius Meinl supermarket, the equivalent to Harrod's in London as far as food is concerned and the home of a tempting Haagen Dazs café. In the centre of street you will find the Pestsaule which is a reminder of the plague years in Vienna. The word Graben means trench as it was part of the original Roman settlement.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: St Ruprecht
  • Tip Rating:
  • St Ruprecht is the oldest church of Vienna and it was found in 740. The building is constructed with Roman stones and was first documented in 1161. The square tower of this romantic church was enlarged twice in 12th century. The original stone altar is still in the church. At the chorus-window there can be seen the oldest glass-paintings of Vienna. There is also a painting of Adam Braun from 1782 on the west wall.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Historical Center
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Innere Stadt (Inner City), Vienna's first district, has been the very heart of the place since the Romans founded Vindobona here in 15 BC. It was here, too, that the Babenburg dukes built their powerbase in the twelfth century, and from 1533 the Habsburgs established the Hofburg, their imperial residence. In fact, the city occupied pretty much the same space until the zigzag fortifications, which had protected the city on two occasions against the Turks, were finally taken down in the mid-nineteenth century.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Stephansplatz & Graben
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the heart of Vienna is the Stephansplatz and Graben. Stephansplatz is a large open area famous for the cathedral of the same name and of the controversial Haas House opposite. Although a large glass building would appear on paper to be rather out of place in one of Vienna's most historical areas I think it works quite well with the prominant reflection of the cathedral showing on the glass. The Graben was a marketplace during the times of Maria Theresa and was the centre point of Viennese life. Today there are a number of shops and cafes along the wide road as well as a couple of fountains and the beutiful Plague Column.
