1.Bezirk / 1st district: Wiener Rathaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rathaus, or Town Hall, is a building built in neo-gothic style designed by Friedrich von Schmidt. You will notice it even from the distance, because of its high tower (98 metres)... you may even mistake it as a church, if yu are not careful. You will also find the city library and archives, there - as well as the assembly hall. As you approach it you will see some statues on both sides - they represent the important people who have had an important role in the city. In the courtyard there are occasionally summer concerts. It is possibe to tour the city hall and see, among others, the Assembly Hall, two Heraldic Rooms, the City Senate Chamber and the Mayor's reception room. If you are into art-nouveau, do not miss the massive chandelier: 3.2 tons lit by 260 lamps.

1.Bezirk / 1st district: Listen to Music performed by music students
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you're in Stephanplatz, in 1st district, city centre, around Kartnerstrasse or the Graben area, you cannot help but hear the sound of music. Yes, the beautiful sound of Classical Music, played by music students and street vendors. There are ample sitting benches and seats along the main shopping streets. You can rest your tired feet and aching backs, while listening to the street/open-air music. Most of the beautiful music are played by music students trying to earn some pocket money and playing to a less critical audiences. You can see solo violinists, harpists, pianists, guitarists, cello-players, and even soprano singers! Sometimes, especially in summer time, there would be a small orchestra of young musicians playing together. Whoever is playing will always attract a small crowd. I would buy a drink or snacks from the nearby Imbiss (food stalls), sit down on one of the benches/seats, and lean back and relax to enjoy the nice music played by these street musicians. After they are finished, I would give them Euro 1-2 into their collection box for their effort.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Graben
  • Tip Rating:
  • It’s one of the most lively squares of the city, flanked by beutiful palaces and luxury shops. Also two fountains are located here and in the middle the Pestsäule, typical expression of Viennese Baroque style, rised in 1693 to thank for the end of the Black Death.

Whilst walking up from the Stephansdom along Rotenturmstrasse, many people don't notice the John F. Kennedy memorial. Vienna has a special affinity with JFK - in Hietzing the Underground station is at Kennedybrücke - the other permanent memorial to Kennedy in Vienna after his assassination in 1963. This memorial is somewhat overlooked - very simple but as a result so unobtrusive.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Cathedral-hopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cathedral-hopping: visit the beautiful churches of this traditionally-Roman Catholic country. People of all religions are welcome to admire the different architectural styles of Stephansdom, Karlskirche, Votivkirche, Peterskirche, Franzikanerkirche, and so on and so on ... Each church in Vienna has its own distinctive character. These are places of contemplation and prayer: it doesn't matter what your religion is, or isn't.

1.Bezirk / 1st district: Right in the heart of town,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Right in the heart of town, across from the St. Stephens Cathedral (Stephansdom), is a relatively new structure called the Haas Haus. It was built while I was living in Vienna and the beauty of this building is the way the mirrored windows reflect the St. Stephens Cathedral in a way almost reminiscent of a Picasso painting.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Neuer Markt
  • Tip Rating:
  • Neuer Markt , the new market, is not a new square... it became Vienna's second market place when the first one (hohermarkt) became too congested. In 1234 it became known as novum forum and originally it was where flour could be bought. At the centre of the square you can find the Providence fountain, which is also called Donner fountain, after the atchitect who built it. The entire square was severely damaged in the war, except for the fountain, that was left untouched. Provindence?

1.Bezirk / 1st district: The house of butterflies
  • Tip Rating:
  • The House of Butterflies is the place there I found lot of colorful butterflies in hot atmosphere with exotic plants. It was interesting to see how butterfly eat bananas, and easily can be touched with hands or photo can be taken on macro mode in even 10-5 cm. This place is not so big, two small flours. As I remember, entrance cost about 3,5 euros.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Kaerntnerstrasse
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kaerntnerstrasse. A central street leading to St.Stephan's Cathedral from the State Opera. Beautiful buildings, souvenir shops, coffee places… Another major central street is Graben, with street musicians, shops and the Holy Trinity Column, erected to commemorate the end of the Great Plague in 1679.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: The Graben.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Look at the Pestsaule on the Graben. In 1679 Emperor Leopold I vowed to commemorate Vienna’s, eventual, deliverance from the plague which was raging. When the plague was over he commissioned Rauchmiller, Burnacini and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to build a Baroque plague column. Its most striking image is a saintly figure and an angel watching over a hag (symbolizing the plague) being destroyed, above that the Emperor is praying. Graben is a pedestrianized street with some lovely shops, but while walking there also look at the building and not just the windows of the shops. There are buildings by Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner.
