    1.Bezirk / 1st district: The Anker Clock
  • Tip Rating:
  • Above Bauernmarkt is an archway which has attached this fascinating clock. Every hour a figure from Austrian history walks across the face of the clock and at noon there is a parade with all the figures walking through together.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: SHOPPING! SHOPPING! SHOPPING!...
  • Tip Rating:
  • SHOPPING! SHOPPING! SHOPPING! Yes, it's very EXPENSIVE to do any decent shopping here... so, just concentrate on buying their souvenirs...and momentos instead. Oh... wait a minute. We found an inexpensive place to shop.... and it's just a 10-minutes walk away from the city center, between Jugendstil-houses - every Saturday from dawn till late-afternoon, you can grab some lovely inexpensive stuffs at one of Vienna's best flea markets. Don't miss this one! Photo Below: My sister trying to shop for some good deals here in Vienna.... but... alas! There were none! If you are willing to spend..... You can try: Helmut Lang Boutique, located at 1st District, Seilergasse 6. The clothes here spell simple elegance with clean lines; unusual fabrics. For jeans lovers, you can grab a Lang jeans for ATS 1,000. Yes, I know.... Not cheap at all. Humana Retro-Trend & Youth, 8th District, Lerchenfelder Strasse 48. I found this shop selling some of the most interesting collection of old clothes (read: Retro). You can almost find anything here from colorful checked flares to wacky Russian shirts. You can also grab some cute razor sharp hot pants here depending on your whim, mood or creed! Lots of things sold here would make our dear friend, Austin Powers very proud! However, if you want to buy chocolates, wines (for your friends back home) or just to buy mineral water (instead of drinking from the hotel's mini bar which costs a bomb!), may I suggest that you visit the following stores? - Hofer - Billa - Magnet - Merkur So, DON'T FORGET to take along your environmental-friendly CLOTH shopping bag (I love this.... it sounds so politically correct) on your shopping sprees. Oh? You don't have one? Well, may I further suggest that you take the first step and buy one since most places CHARGE for shopping bags! :-))

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Albertinaplatz & The Albertina
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Albertina houses a large collection of fine art from the likes of Da Vinci, Michaelangelo and Rembrandt which rotates throughout the year. Outside the gallery is a nice Danube fountain. On the Albertinaplatz make sure you check out the Warning Against Fascism memorial.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Visit the pedestrian-only...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit the pedestrian-only Graben. It is home to lots of pricey stores and outdoor cafes. There is also a memorial, the Pestsaule, to those who perished in the plague of 1679. It is one of the most fashionable districts in one of the most fashionable cities in the world.

    1.Bezirk / 1st district: Vienna City Tour Part 2
  • Tip Rating:
  • After you visited those two buildings i would take a strawl down Kohlmarkt (THE area too shop if you have tons of money and dont need it) and then either take a left turn too "Meinl am Graben" Viennas best supermarket for gourmets or a right turn on the Graben, which is also the border of the old Roman legions camp of Vindobona. The first thing you will see is the "Pest Column" which depicts Emperor Leopold I. as savior from the pest and every other possible danger heavenly or from earth (Built in 1687 by Fischer von Erlach) If you continue too walk straight ahead you ll see ... a McDonalds ... (ok take a few steps back now you walked too far). On the left is St. Stephans Cathedral on the right is the "Stock im Eisen Platz" which translates roughly as "Iron clad tree Stick". It got its name from the Stick into which every Apprentice hammerd a nail once he finished his learning time in Vienna, But back too St. Stephans now: First built as a small church in 1471 it was enlarged and enlarged again until it got its final form in 1578, when it was decided not to finish the small tower and just top it of with a small cuppola If you look carefully you can still see the facade of the old churches incorporated into the gothic cathedral. The finished tower is 136meters high (thats 446 feet) ... (Seems pretty high but in fact you could put the church and the tower inside the cuppola of St. Peters in Rome and it would still not scratch the celing there). In fact this tower was the highest building in Vienna until the "Millenium Tower" was constructed in the year 2000. You can climb the tower but be advised there is an elevator only too the smaller one, the higher one has too be climbed by stairs.
