Between the two buildings of the Anchor Insurance Company, in the heart of the Hoher Markt, stands the famed Ankeruhr, or Anchor Clock. Designed by celebrated Viennese painter Franz von Matsch, it was completed in 1917. At noon, it chimes and displays historical figures from Austria's history. It's a unique piece of work, one of Vienna little oddities. Leave a Comment

The pedestrians-only zone of old Vienna is centered around St Stephan's Cathedral, along Graben and Kartnerstrasse. Here is where one can savor the city's famed coffee, or enjoy authentic Viennese cuisine. It's a fine place to stroll about, shop, or just watch the world go by. Leave a Comment

The Freyung is a square with a triangular shape, and the the most striking thing about it is the Austriabrunnen (Austria Fountain). The fountain has the theme of four rivers ( the Danube, the Elbe, the Po, and Vistula) that formerly flowed through the Austrian Empire. Rumour has it that Allma von Goethe, the granddaughter of the poet, was the model for the figure on the fountain. The Schottenkirche also lays on the Feryung and was founded by Irish monks in the 13. century. Leave a Comment Directions: U-bahn station Schottentor

Die Albertina was opened on 14.March 2003, and houses changing international art exhibitions. You will see posters throughout the city with the current featured artists and works. Alternatively, there are the Habsburgs' Staterooms, which are really rather boring, and not worth going to see unless you go for the art exhibition as well (the cost to see the state rooms are included in the price to see the exhibition). Leave a Comment Directions: Near U-bahn/bus/tram station Karlsplatz/Oper. Sits right across the street from the tourist office

The Karlskirche (Charles Church) is located very close to the subway stop called "Karlsplatz", along the subway line U1. The church is absolutely amazing, but more from the outside than from the inside. It's really worth just to go to the big square in front of the church--there's a big round fountain in front of it--and jus sit there and admire the architecure from the outside. Especially nice is the reflection of the church in the fountain in front--really a great place to sit and reflect, literally! The most amazing aspect of the church exterior are the two massive columns, built as a replica of the Trajan's column in Rome. The church was finished in 1730 and was built after the emperor, Charles VI, had made a promise he made that he would build the church if the Black Plague would leave the city. Important tip: If you go inside, don't expect too much! Otherwise, you'll be disappointed--as the exterior of the church is much more ornate than the interior! Opening hours: Monday - Saturday: 09:00 - 12:30, 13:00-18:00. Sunday and holidays: 12:00 - 17:45. Last entrance possible at 17:30. One important tip: Leave a Comment Directions: !st district, not far from opera and Musikverein. Subway stop Karlsplatz, Line U1, the Red Line.

Close to the center located Stadtpark to the river Wien does as a natural landscape. It is a selected opportunity to comes to rest after a walk through the city busyness. I addition to the nature there is much to admire art, which is abundantly present in the form of statues of famous artists and composers such as Schubert, Schindler, Bruckner, Makart, Stolz and don't forget the fameus Johan Straus. The walk through the park one can conclude with a visit to the Kursalon where a cafe-restaurant (sometimes with music) is established. For a visuel impression see the last part of Palace Schönbrun . Directions: Accessible by all trams along the Parkring and U-Bahn U4-Stadtpark

9 hours gives you just enough time to get a small taste of the city. There's a rapid transit train and also a bus connection into town, takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Then take the subway to the Stephansplatz, that the very center of Vienna. Just walk around the 1st district, which is mostly a pedestrian zone, most of the city's famous buidings are located there. Have a nice lunch at one of the many small restaurants in the side streets off Karntnerstrasse and Graben, or have a simple lunch (or cake and coffee) at one of the coffehouses. Unfortunately I have to admit that Vienna is what we call "an expensive pavement", in other words be prepared for high prices. Hope this helps.

Named Schmetterlinghaus this is a big greenhouse right near the opera. Inside there is one of the biggest butterfly house - numerous butterflies you can see, feel and take pictures with. Affordable price for entry, only EUR 5.5 the full price, EUR 2.50 for children under 16. Leave a Comment

There are some interesting works in Stadtpark, like the statues made of wood on the first picture. It looks like a child trying to catch a balloon, and his mom hugging the tree (why I don't know). Even the flower and bushes have beautiful forms and there's also a beautiful floral clock. In here you will find a statue of Strauss playing the violin and sometimes a guy selling concert tickets. And if you want, bring some bread and feed the ducks at the lake inside. Directions: U4: Stadtpark, trams 1, 2: Weihburggasse.
