by Raimix Hofburg theatre is opposite to Vienna Ratthaus (Town Hall). Its architecture looks similar with mush theatres in Europe, especially built in Austrian-Hungarian Empire period and German lands. Leave a Comment Directions: Opposite to Town Hall

by Raimix As I like Ancient history of Europe, Ancient Greece and Rome, I was lucky to see remains of Roman building just in the centre of Vienna. Really greatly presented and not destroyed object shows long history of Vienna city, that it is not only the treasure of Austrian-Hungarian Empire, but of Ancient Europe too. Leave a Comment

by Raimix My photo shows the sculpture in Albertina. Some of Vienna sculptures have two main objects - horse and famous person on it. It is funny, that these people can look very small without horses. The Albertina itself is building, consisting of graphic art collection: art of famous people like Rubens, Da Vinci and so on. The Albertina houses a large collection of fine art from the likes of Da Vinci, Michaelangelo and Rembrandt which rotates throughout the year. Outside the gallery is a nice Danube fountain. On the Albertinaplatz make sure you check out the Warning Against Fascism memorial.

Most of the buildings in Backerstrasse are among the best preserved buildings in the city. Build between the 15th and 18th centuries these buildings have remained unchanged on the whole since then. Some have some nice little original touches like a cow playing backgammon painted onto one of them (see photo). Directions: Nr. Schwedenplatz

Above Bauernmarkt is an archway which has attached this fascinating clock. Every hour a figure from Austrian history walks across the face of the clock and at noon there is a parade with all the figures walking through together.

At the heart of Vienna is the Stephansplatz and Graben. Stephansplatz is a large open area famous for the cathedral of the same name and of the controversial Haas House opposite. Although a large glass building would appear on paper to be rather out of place in one of Vienna's most historical areas I think it works quite well with the prominant reflection of the cathedral showing on the glass. The Graben was a marketplace during the times of Maria Theresa and was the centre point of Viennese life. Today there are a number of shops and cafes along the wide road as well as a couple of fountains and the beutiful Plague Column.

When you're in Stephanplatz, in 1st district, city centre, around Kartnerstrasse or the Graben area, you cannot help but hear the sound of music. Yes, the beautiful sound of Classical Music, played by music students and street vendors. There are ample sitting benches and seats along the main shopping streets. You can rest your tired feet and aching backs, while listening to the street/open-air music. Most of the beautiful music are played by music students trying to earn some pocket money and playing to a less critical audiences. You can see solo violinists, harpists, pianists, guitarists, cello-players, and even soprano singers! Sometimes, especially in summer time, there would be a small orchestra of young musicians playing together. Whoever is playing will always attract a small crowd. I would buy a drink or snacks from the nearby Imbiss (food stalls), sit down on one of the benches/seats, and lean back and relax to enjoy the nice music played by these street musicians. After they are finished, I would give them Euro 1-2 into their collection box for their effort.

providentia by call_me_rhia Neuer Markt , the new market, is not a new square... it became Vienna's second market place when the first one (hohermarkt) became too congested. In 1234 it became known as novum forum and originally it was where flour could be bought. At the centre of the square you can find the Providence fountain, which is also called Donner fountain, after the atchitect who built it. The entire square was severely damaged in the war, except for the fountain, that was left untouched. Provindence? Leave a Comment Directions: roughly between Stephansplatz and the Staatsoper, at the end of a side lane
