The Belvedere was completed in 1723 which now houses the Austrian Museum of Baroque Art (Lower) which displays Austrian art of the 18th century and the collection of 19th and 20th century art (Upper), most notably, "The Kiss", by Gustav Klimt.

The prince Eugene of Savoy who was also military commander had very big power and influence in the 17th and 18th century. He also had very good taste in art. Setting up these two things he could by the big art collection and also good place where to build new palace for him. From this place he could see almost all the city. Also nowadays from the upper palace you can catch good view to the city’s roofs and spires. There are two palaces: the upper and lower. Why so? Because they are built on the hillside, one higher than other. And they are separated by huge French gardens. Their author have planed the gardens for Versailles, too. The gardens are dedicated to different symbols from antique world. And here you will also see many figures with lion’s body and people’s head. The upper palace was built for celebrations and presentations, but lower for living during summer. Nowadays they houses museums. If you’re Klimt lover than worth to see and go inside in the upper Belvedere!

Belvedere Palace and its garden ... actually, it should be PalacES, because this wonderful example of baroque architecture actually comprises two palaces called upper and lower Belvedere. The gently sloping very fine baroque garden links the two. From the upper Belvedere at the top of the hill you can literally have a wonderful view of Vienna and the Wienerwald hills to the north. And on the top of that all, both Belvederes contain wonderful collections of art. Most noteworthy perhaps is the 19th century paintings collection in the upper Belvedere also containing some major expressionist art by my all-time favourite Kokoschka, Klimt and Schiele. Good disabled access to the upper palace, although some parts require detours and usage of different lifts.

    Belvedere: The Belvedere Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The palace was completed in 1723 as a gift for Prince Eugene of Savoy(1663-1736) as his summer residence. The staterooms in the Upper and Lower Belvedere are a unique venue for wedding. This is a beautiful venue for wedding. The palace is awesome and very beautiful was quite cold in December though.

    Belvedere: LOWER BELVEDERE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Linked to the Schloss Belvedere by a long garden, this building is part of the Belvedere complex, though much less sumptuous than the upper palace. Still, its interior is well worth visiting. I imagine the palace owes its name to the nice panoramic views it has over Vienna...

    Belvedere: Belvedere Palace Prince Eugene...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Belvedere Palace Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), the most brilliant military mind of his age and the legendary conqueror of the Turks (his equestrian statue can be found on Heldenplatz), commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to design and build this garden palace as a summer residence outside the walls of the city. After Eugene's death, the palace, rated as one of the most exquisite Baroque structures of the world, was acquired by the Habsburg family. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was the residence of Archduke Francis Ferdinand (who was assassinated at Sarajevo in 1914).

    Belvedere: Lower Belvedere
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Lower Belvedere (Unteres Belvedere) was constructed between 1714 and 1716 in order to serve like summer room of prince Eugene. It has two long and simple facades, one external and on the poligonal courtyard of honor, the other inner one, towards the garden, both characterized from an identical body center with adorned balustrades of coronament with statues.

  • Set in the heart of Vienna, the Belvedere Palaces and their spacious parks are an impressive example of baroque art. The museums in the upper and lower palaces offer an excellent and comprehensive survey of Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day. The 19th und 20th century collections also include a wealth of international art. In the Upper Belvedere you can see famous works by Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka, Renoir or Monet and appreciate a splendid view of Vienna's inner city. Medieval and baroque works of art are presented in the Lower Palace, where most rooms have been preserved in their original state.

    Belvedere: Belvedere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schloss Belvedere was built from the plan of Prince Eugene of Savoy, and consists of 2 complexes, Upper Belvedere (1722) and Lower Belvedere (1716). Upper Belvedere is in the photo, and was intended more for display than Lower Belvedere which served as living quarters during the summer. Today the palaces house the museum of midevil art and baroque museum, as well as changing exhibitions.

    Belvedere: Belvedere
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Belvedere Palace was built in 1721-22, when Prince Eugene of Savoy --during the war against the Turks, Commander in Chief of the Imperial Army-- asked Johan Lukas von Hildebrandt to construct a Summer palace. He actually never lived here. Nowadays inside the Palace there’s the Austrian Gallery, with 19th and 20th centuries Austrian and International works, among others there are works of Amerling, Hausner, Hundertwasser, Klimt, Kokoscha, Romako, Schiele, Waldmüller, and some French impressionists too.
