The Belvedere Palace complex (consisting of the Upper and Lower Belvedere Palaces) was built by Prince Eugene of Savoy as a summer residence. The two palaces are now art museums. The Lower Belvedere Palace is a museum of medieval and baroque art.

    Belvedere: BELVEDERE PALACE
  • Tip Rating:
  • The collections at the Belvedere are located in the Upper and Lower Belvedere Palaces, built for Prince Eugene of Savoy as a summer residence. In the Upper Belvedere you can find works from 19 and 20 century artists such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele und Oskar Kokoschka. The Baroque Musuem and Medieval Art Museum can be found through the gardens in the Lower Belvedere. The signing of the Austrian State Treaty, one of the most important Austrian historical events of the 20th century, took place in the Marble Room of the Upper Belvedere. It was signed by ministers from the USSR, US, France, England and the Außenminister Leopold Figl. It signalled the beginning of Austrian independence and neutrality as well as the withdrawal of the occupying powers. The Belvedere museums are open Tues to Sun from 10-18 and entrance costs around 7.50 Euros

The Upper Belvedere Palace was originally built as a summer residence by Prince Eugene of Savoy. It now houses a museum of 19th and 20th century art, with an emphasis on Austrian artists. In addition to its fine art collection, the Upper Belevedere Palace also offers visitors a nice view of Vienna because of its hilltop location.

    Belvedere: Schloss Belvedere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Belvedere's a remarkable palace that'll sweep you off your feet. Its gardens, with lovely sculptures and fountains, are really spectacular. The palace was built between 1700 and 1725 as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy according to designs by Johann Lukas von Hildebrant. The complex consists of the 'Upper' (Oberes) and the 'Lower' (Unteres) Belvedere and houses important art collections. Here the Peace Treaty was signed in 1955 with the occupying Allies.

    Belvedere: Senses
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are 4 paintings in the Austrian Gallery which exhibit the human senses of sight, hearing, touch & smell. It's one of the more interesting exhibits I found in this Gallery. Other important works which you should look out for are those of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka & Herbert Boeckl. The Austrian Gallery is where you'll find nearly all the paintings of Gustav Klimt (not the Secession). Yes, I know a lot of you have seen pix of Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer & "The Kiss". I've also seen them b4 visiting this Gallery. But, to say the truth, I've been to many museums in the world & have seen a great deal of works of art... but, it's only here at the Gallery that paintings by an artist came alive & a must-see in person. These are the paintings by Klimt. It's NOT the same seeing them in person. It's quite a unique experience for me, one I wasn't expecting but was pleasantly surprised nonetheless. Picasso, Van Gogh, Rubens, Dali, etc, etc... all those great artists... I don't have that experience. But here, I finally saw something valuable (to me, ie). & unfortunately, & rightly so, these paintings are not allowed to be photographed! Hence, you have to go & see it for yourself. & tell me if you feel the same :-)

    Belvedere: South view
  • Tip Rating:
  • Upper Belvedere as seen from the south entrance (Prinz-Eugene-Strasse & Landstrasser Gurtel). It features many statues & a large pool in front of it. Somehow, the view from this end reminded me of the chateaux in France. Perhaps it's partly due to fact that the Prince was originally from France.

Belvedere: Belvedere Palace ~ Upper Belvedere from the gates
  • Tip Rating:
  • A view of the Upper Belvedere from the high gate. Prince Eugen used the Upper Belvedere to entertain guests and the Lower Belevedere was his summer home. The former is simply to big to be a home!!! After his death, the baroque palace became part of the House of Habsburg possession. And during early 1900s, the heir to the Austrian throne F Ferdinand and his wife lived there. During a trip to Sarajevo he was assinated and it is then Austria launch a war against Serbia and that is how WWI started.
