    Belvedere Palace
Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), the most brilliant military mind of his age and the legendary conqueror of the Turks (his equestrian statue can be found on Heldenplatz), commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to design and build this garden palace as a summer residence outside the walls of the city. After Eugene's death, the palace, rated as one of the most exquisite Baroque structures of the world, was acquired by the Habsburg family. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was the residence of Archduke Francis Ferdinand (who was assassinated at Sarajevo in 1914).

Belvedere's a remarkable palace that'll sweep you off your feet. Its gardens, with lovely sculptures and fountains, are really spectacular.

The palace was built between 1700 and 1725 as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy according to designs by Johann Lukas von Hildebrant.

The complex consists of the 'Upper' (Oberes) and the 'Lower' (Unteres) Belvedere and houses important art collections.

Here the Peace Treaty was signed in 1955 with the occupying Allies.

Prince Eugene was really more French than Italian, much less Austrian, so it's entirely appropriate that his gardens have a feel which is very much "French Baroque." In fact, one of the chief designed of the Versaille pleasure grounds, Dominique Girard, was brought in to work here. Of course, a lot has changed over the last 300 years, but the original intent of Girard and his colleagues can still be discerned.

The collections at the Belvedere are located in the Upper and Lower Belvedere Palaces, built for Prince Eugene of Savoy as a summer residence. In the Upper Belvedere you can find works from 19 and 20 century artists such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele und Oskar Kokoschka. The Baroque Musuem and Medieval Art Museum can be found through the gardens in the Lower Belvedere.
The signing of the Austrian State Treaty, one of the most important Austrian historical events of the 20th century, took place in the Marble Room of the Upper Belvedere. It was signed by ministers from the USSR, US, France, England and the Außenminister Leopold Figl. It signalled the beginning of Austrian independence and neutrality as well as the withdrawal of the occupying powers.
The Belvedere museums are open Tues to Sun from 10-18 and entrance costs around 7.50 Euros

There are 4 paintings in the Austrian Gallery which exhibit the human senses of sight, hearing, touch & smell. It's one of the more interesting exhibits I found in this Gallery.

Other important works which you should look out for are those of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka & Herbert Boeckl.

The Austrian Gallery is where you'll find nearly all the paintings of Gustav Klimt (not the Secession).

Yes, I know a lot of you have seen pix of Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer & "The Kiss". I've also seen them b4 visiting this Gallery. But, to say the truth, I've been to many museums in the world & have seen a great deal of works of art... but, it's only here at the Gallery that paintings by an artist came alive & a must-see in person. These are the paintings by Klimt. It's NOT the same seeing them in person. It's quite a unique experience for me, one I wasn't expecting but was pleasantly surprised nonetheless.

Picasso, Van Gogh, Rubens, Dali, etc, etc... all those great artists...
    I don't have that experience.
But here, I finally saw something valuable (to me, ie).

& unfortunately, & rightly so, these paintings are not allowed to be photographed!

Hence, you have to go & see it for yourself.
& tell me if you feel the same :-)

Upper Belvedere as seen from the south entrance (Prinz-Eugene-Strasse & Landstrasser Gurtel). It features many statues & a large pool in front of it.

Somehow, the view from this end reminded me of the chateaux in France. Perhaps it's partly due to fact that the Prince was originally from France.

A view of the Upper Belvedere from the high gate. Prince Eugen used the Upper Belvedere to entertain guests and the Lower Belevedere was his summer home. The former is simply to big to be a home!!!

After his death, the baroque palace became part of the House of Habsburg possession.
And during early 1900s, the heir to the Austrian throne F Ferdinand and his wife lived there. During a trip to Sarajevo he was assinated and it is then Austria launch a war against Serbia and that is how WWI started.

Prince Eugene earned his name and recognition from his bravery and success against the Turks. He was also known as the Sword of Hapsburg.

The Belvedere consists of two palaces on the same ground; the Upper and Lower, and both separated by a splendid garden.

The picture shows the high gates with the top part the baroque portal of the Ipper Belvedere

the baroque castle of Prinz Eugen - The Belvedere is a baroque palace complex built by Prince Eugene of Savoy in the 3rd district of Vienna, south-east of the city center.

After buying the plot of land in 1697, Prince Eugene had a large park created. The Schloss Belvedere began as a suburban entertainment villa: in 1714 work began to erect what is now called the Lower Belvedere, not as a palace but as a garden villa, with an orangerie and paintings gallery, with suitable living quarters. The architect was Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, one of the most important architects of the Austrian Baroque, who produced in the complex of buildings his masterwork.
In 1720-1723, the Upper Belvedere was built, originally intended simply to provide a suitable end to the main garden axis. The architect was again Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. Once again there is a central Marmorsaal?the site of the signing of the treaty the formed modern Austria, May 15, 1955?but the schloss was soon enlarged to provide the main summer residence of Prince Eugene. Its painted ceilings are by Carlo Carlone, with an altarpiece in the chapel by Francesco Solimena.

The complex was sold in 1752 to Maria Theresa by the prince's heiress. Maria Theresa first named the schloss "Belvedere". Under the Habsburgs it was further extended. Since 1775, the Belvedere has housed the imperial picture gallery on behalf of Joseph II, and in 1806 the collection of Ambras Palace was moved to the Lower Belvedere as well. Both were transferred to the Museum of Art History (Kunsthistorisches Museum) in 1890. The last to reside here was Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Since World War I, the Austrian Gallery museum resides in the Belvedere.
