"Neustift am Walde" and "Grinzing" are both in the 19th District of Vienna and the sites of large number of Heurigen restaurants. However, I find Neustift am Walde to be less crowded and less touristic than Grinzing. The 19th District hosts some of the most expensive residential areas in Vienna including tourist-famous Grinzing, the quiet Sievering, Kaasgraben and Neustift am Walde. Neustift am Walde is located in the northwestern part of Vienna city. While Grinzing is more touristic and more visited, Neustift am Walde is the more local part of the scene. Local austrians/viennese visit the nice heurigers in Neustift am Walde during warm days/nights and sit out in the beautiful gardens to enjoy lots of grilled or fried meats and salads, washed down with cold beers or wines. If you have time, go and visit Neustift am Walde; see how the locals really have a good time drinking and eating out in their own wine taverns and beer gardens. Directions: To get to Neustift am Walde, take the Underground Line U4 to Spittlelau and then the Bus 35A until you reach the bus stop of Neustift am Walde. The Bus 35A will stop directly in front one of the famous Heuriger restaurants in the area.

In Summer and Autumn, take the time to enjoy the Heurigers (Vienna's local wine taverns) in Grinzing, the wineyard district of Vienna. You can enjoy the young wines, eat local austrian dishes, and experience the wine tavern life that the local austrians enjoy so much. You can sit out in the garden, drink lots of young wines, and see the grapevines hanging above your head. When you're hungry, you can go inside the heuriger and get cold or warm food from small selections behind the counter. Don't expect to get hot freshly cooked food in heurigers. Directions: Take the U4 underground train to Heillegenstadt and then Bus no. 38A to Grinzing.

Grinzing (19th district) is not the only place with Heurigers (wine taverns); in fact, the Heurigers in Grinzing are more touristy and expensive. We heard that Stammersdorf (21st district of Vienna) has some good local non-touristy Heurigers and so we wanted to try one out. When we got there, we discovered that the street of Stammersdorf Kellerstrasse was lined with many heurigers and we were spoilt for choices. So we decided to go into Wienhof-Heuriger Wieninger. From the outside, the Wienhof looked quite simple and kinda quiet. However, when we walked into the heuriger-restaurant, we were surprised to find the place full of lively austrians. The large interior room was warmly light and cosy, with wood panellings, tables and benches. They have a good buffet selection (warm & cold food including salads) and a good variety of local wines on the wine list. All the food is good and delicious. The local wines are also excellent; you should try the Chadonnay Classic. The wines come from their wine estate, Wiengut Wieninger. The prices were reasonable and inexpensive. There is however one small problem with the Heuriger or any heurigers in Vienna or Austria. The austrians love their smoke, and even though there is a designated non-smoking area, most of the dining rooms tend to get smoky. Blame it on poor ventilation. But during the warmer months, you can sit outside in the gardens under the shady vegetations; so you can still avoid the smoky feeling in the Heurigers. Directions: Take the regional bus 228 from Floridsdorf (U6) to Stammersdorfer Kellerstrasse (shortest); or take Tram 31 from Schottenring (U4) or Floridsdorf (U6) until tram end-station "Stammersdorf". Then walk to Stammersdorf Kellerstrasse.

nice colors.... by mindcrime Grinzing was long ago a separate town but now you can go there by tram. Many travel agencies have it on their tour program so especially in summer it gets croweded by tourists! If you don't want to get seated together with a dozen of other tourists in the Heurigers of this beautiful village go early, take some photos of the nice colors that the houses have, enjoy a coffee or a chocolate cake and return back to Vienna.

Once you get to Grinzing, you have several options for what you can do. Naturally a small quaint district such as this will have shops, antiques, etc...but the main reason to come to Grinzing are the following two: Hiking up and/or down the mountain that gently slopes over the town is a recommended must see. There is a bus that takes you to the top...which is what I normally did...bus up, walk down. As one is walking down the mountain side on worn trails (or biking, if you prefer) one passes by vinyards...vinyards which have signs on them advertising the number of their wine. Therefore if a vinyard looks particularly appealing to you, simply remember the number and at the end of your walk, once you're back into Grinzig, go to the second reason why people come to Grinzig: the Heurigen (where you'll utiltize that vinyard number!). The Heurigens are wonderful...usually delicious food (in a buffet kind of setting), warm fires during the winter, and lots of local wines. Fairly cheap as well....about 2.20 euro for a glass of wine. I recommend the wine with fruit...that's delicious. Now if you saw a vinyard that you liked on your walk, simply ask if they carry that number of wine...if not, it's fun to go from Heurigen to Heurigen tasting all the wines until you find the one you want. : ) Now, some native Viennese will tell you that the true Heurigens are not in Grinzing...one must leave the city and go to the countryside for the true experience. I would agree that the countryside is a more authentic, true experience (and Austrian wines are to die for, btw) however, if one doesn't have enough time, simply go to Grinzing. It is still stunning in it's beauty, and quite the treat regardless of other's impressions. Leave a Comment Directions: There is a bus and a tram that goes to Grinzing...if I am not mistaken the line numbers and names are: 19.,Grinzing 38: Grinzing Just aim for the 19th district and be sure to ask the locals if you're lost : )Website: http://home.pages.at/wolfs/vie/grinzpic.html

At a local club by viennawalker I just moved to this area from Canada and the night life here is not at all what some think. The partying does not close down at 11:30. Although most bars in this area are Austrian, almost every one in the working industry speaks english and both adults and teenagers are out till late. I can still here the customers at the heurigers laughing away and singing to music at 2 in the morning. And I have left clubs at 2:30, and people are still partying. It's a great place to live. Lots of history, great food..great walks in the Vienna woods to Khalenberg or Leopolsberg and everything one needs from grocery stores to toy stores is all this area. At night ime the town is full of tour busses full of people to load up on the great heuriger wine. Leave a Comment Directions: GrinzigOther Contact: becca_t85@hotmail.com

We took the tram 38 to Grinzing and went to sample the wines in the typical Heurigen (heurig means "this year's") A Heuriger has legal limitations compared to taverns or restaurants: only its own wine can be served. The tram 38 goes from Schottentor U-bahn (line U2) station all the way Grinzing. When it gets to the village it does a sharp left, goes under a building and that's the last/first stop so getting there and back couldn't be simplier. If you want to carry on further up the hill, the bus 38A goes from the High Street just before the tram stop. We went to Heurigens located down the hill (Sandgasse) i.e when we left the tram stop we turned right. In the corner of Sandgasse and Grinzinger Allee (where the tram comes from) there is a large Heurigen/Hotel "Grinzinger Hof". That was out first stop: we had a lovely meal and huge glass of weiss wein gespritzer (white wine spritzer). You can ask for it with soda or water. We went there about 5 o'clock and had an early dinner, about 7 o'clock the whole village was overrun with bus loads of French tourists. Best time to go -early afternoon! Heuriger in Mauer/Vienna by susineumann Of course you should visit a Heurigen - a typical wine restaurant - but do not go to Grinzing. It's full of Japanese tourists. Better go to Stammersdorf, Mauer or Neustift am Walde. Not sure how to know if it's a tourist trap? Does your "Heurigen" serve beer? Yes? - then you should definitely NOT go there...

by pipsqueak Visit a Heurigen, or Wine Garten. This is why, Vienna equates itself with wine for me. There is usually a buffet-style counter where you get your various meats, cheeses and potatoes and then the waitress takes your order for beverages once you find a place to sit There are a bunch of Winegartens in Grinzing just a tram ride from Vienna. We sampled a number of wines and met other travelers. We posed for pictures with a tour group from China and met a whole table of businessmen from Sweden who invited us to join them. Even though we sang songs and were a little more rowdy than most of the other patrons, the waitress didn't kick us out, come to think of it, if she had, I would have felt better the next day.
