We took the tram 38 to Grinzing and went to sample the wines in the typical Heurigen (heurig means "this year's") A Heuriger has legal limitations compared to taverns or restaurants: only its own wine can be served.
The tram 38 goes from Schottentor U-bahn (line U2) station all the way Grinzing. When it gets to the village it does a sharp left, goes under a building and that's the last/first stop so getting there and back couldn't be simplier. If you want to carry on further up the hill, the bus 38A goes from the High Street just before the tram stop.
We went to Heurigens located down the hill (Sandgasse) i.e when we left the tram stop we turned right. In the corner of Sandgasse and Grinzinger Allee (where the tram comes from) there is a large Heurigen/Hotel "Grinzinger Hof". That was out first stop: we had a lovely meal and huge glass of weiss wein gespritzer (white wine spritzer). You can ask for it with soda or water.
We went there about 5 o'clock and had an early dinner, about 7 o'clock the whole village was overrun with bus loads of French tourists. Best time to go -early afternoon!

Grinzing is a neighbourhood in Vienna on the outermost northwestern edge. 45% of the neighbourhood are covered by forest and another 33% is used for agriculture (most being vinyards).
It is famous for the restaurants and wineries (Heuriger). It is worth a visit just for the Heurigen to sample the wine and food. However the other attractive thing about the area is fact that you are in a world capital, yet feel as though you are in a small village, surrounded by nature.

Grinzing (19th district) is not the only place with Heurigers (wine taverns); in fact, the Heurigers in Grinzing are more touristy and expensive. We heard that Stammersdorf (21st district of Vienna) has some good local non-touristy Heurigers and so we wanted to try one out. When we got there, we discovered that the street of Stammersdorf Kellerstrasse was lined with many heurigers and we were spoilt for choices.
So we decided to go into Wienhof-Heuriger Wieninger. From the outside, the Wienhof looked quite simple and kinda quiet. However, when we walked into the heuriger-restaurant, we were surprised to find the place full of lively austrians. The large interior room was warmly light and cosy, with wood panellings, tables and benches. They have a good buffet selection (warm & cold food including salads) and a good variety of local wines on the wine list. All the food is good and delicious. The local wines are also excellent; you should try the Chadonnay Classic. The wines come from their wine estate, Wiengut Wieninger. The prices were reasonable and inexpensive.
There is however one small problem with the Heuriger or any heurigers in Vienna or Austria. The austrians love their smoke, and even though there is a designated non-smoking area, most of the dining rooms tend to get smoky. Blame it on poor ventilation.
But during the warmer months, you can sit outside in the gardens under the shady vegetations; so you can still avoid the smoky feeling in the Heurigers.

Grinzing was long ago a separate town but now you can go there by tram. Many travel agencies have it on their tour program so especially in summer it gets croweded by tourists!
If you don't want to get seated together with a dozen of other tourists in the Heurigers of this beautiful village go early, take some photos of the nice colors that the houses have, enjoy a coffee or a chocolate cake and return back to Vienna.

If you visit Vienna you should definetely try some good wines! Don't forget that Austria has a great wine tradition. I tried two or three types. The red I found it too sec and I liked most the white wine.
Grinzig is a small village very close to Vienna. It's a traditional austrian place with beautiful houses, green surroundings. There are a lot of Heuriger in Grinzing and it's a very tourist place. People in Heuriger sell their own wine and they are dressed with traditional custumes. This is a great spectacle and also you could drink good wine in a garden and watch the mountains!
Even if you do not like wine I recomend you a visit to Grinzig because it's a beautiful place!

"Neustift am Walde" and "Grinzing" are both in the 19th District of Vienna and the sites of large number of Heurigen restaurants. However, I find Neustift am Walde to be less crowded and less touristic than Grinzing.
The 19th District hosts some of the most expensive residential areas in Vienna including tourist-famous Grinzing, the quiet Sievering, Kaasgraben and Neustift am Walde.
Neustift am Walde is located in the northwestern part of Vienna city. While Grinzing is more touristic and more visited, Neustift am Walde is the more local part of the scene. Local austrians/viennese visit the nice heurigers in Neustift am Walde during warm days/nights and sit out in the beautiful gardens to enjoy lots of grilled or fried meats and salads, washed down with cold beers or wines.
If you have time, go and visit Neustift am Walde; see how the locals really have a good time drinking and eating out in their own wine taverns and beer gardens.

In Summer and Autumn, take the time to enjoy the Heurigers (Vienna's local wine taverns) in Grinzing, the wineyard district of Vienna. You can enjoy the young wines, eat local austrian dishes, and experience the wine tavern life that the local austrians enjoy so much. You can sit out in the garden, drink lots of young wines, and see the grapevines hanging above your head. When you're hungry, you can go inside the heuriger and get cold or warm food from small selections behind the counter. Don't expect to get hot freshly cooked food in heurigers.

Of course you should visit a Heurigen - a typical wine restaurant - but do not go to Grinzing. It's full of Japanese tourists. Better go to Stammersdorf, Mauer or Neustift am Walde. Not sure how to know if it's a tourist trap? Does your "Heurigen" serve beer? Yes? - then you should definitely NOT go there...

It is a very pretty village although it is pretty much a tourist attraction, and is divided into two parts – the upper and lower towns. It was repeatedly damaged by Turkish troops during the sieges of Vienna and then later by napoleon’s forces in 1809. We went there to visit the Mahler grave. His (ex) wife is also buried there.
take a walk through Grinzing and see the bust of the composer Schubert. He spent a lot of time in Grinzing and who can blame him it is a lovely little place with lots of places to eat or drink.

Take the 38 Tram at the Schottentor (Universitaet) and go to Grinzing. Then take the 38A bus to Kahlenberg. You will be surprised to see the whole city from above, all the bridges, Donua and even till Hungary.
