Hofburg: Hofburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a huge place. Once the winter palace of the Habsburgs, the vast and impressive Hofburg sits in the heart of Vienna. The place, as it was then, was constructed in 1279 and grew with the empire to the huge place it is today. The earliest parts surround a courtyard, the Swiss Court, named for the Swiss mercenaries who performed guard duty here. The palace has more than 2,600 rooms - but only about two dozen that are open to the public. The Hofburg was described by my tour guide as being virtually a city within a city.

Hofburg: The impressive facade of the Michaelertrakt
  • Tip Rating:
  • This wing of the Hofburg was built only in the late 19th century, so purists could have ground to question its style. However, its proportions are so elegant and the general effect is so harmonious that even a fastidious lover of architecture like me can love this building.

    Hofburg: Hofburg – Heldenplatz -
  • Tip Rating:
  • From the courtyard In der Burg, an underpass in Leopoldinischer Trakt leads to the Heldenplatz (public square of heroes), immense external courtyard of the Hofburg, a time used for military parades, today in part garden, part parking. Sluice on the bottom from the Burgtor, than separates it from Ringstrasse, the public square is delimited on the opposite side from the long baroque facade of the Leopoldinischer Trakt, only marked from the balcony of the noble plan; on the left there are, at first, the facades of the Zeremoniensaal, realized in 1802-1806 on plan of L.de Montoyer for being used like it knows it of the throne, and of the Festsaal, colossal room of festivities (m2 1000) obtained in the connection with the Neue Burg from Baumann in 1911 (today both part of the center conferences). Always on the left, but more rear, there is the concave facade of the Neue Burgs faced from the equestrian statue by bronze of prince Eugene of Savoie work of T.Fernkorn (1859-65). The immense garden of the Volksgarten closes on the fourth side the Heldenplatz.

    Hofburg: Albertina
  • Tip Rating:
  • The palace, hidden away in a corner of the Hofburg, was owned by Maria Christina and her husband Duke Albert of Sachsen-Teschen (hence its name). She was Maria Theresa's daughter. It is now a gallery with a marvellous collection of prints, watercolours and dawings. There are some wonderful ones by Durer but of course my favourite artists are represented as well - Michelangelo and Rubens.

    Hofburg: Amazing Hofburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Hofburg is the secular center of Vienna. It was the Emperior´s home until 1918. The building complex today houses numerous museums and collections, the spanish Riding School and the Austrian National Library. In the Leopoldinischen Wing are found the Federal President´s offices. The Hofburg is a complex which experienced many expansions in the course of centuries, and for this reason there are juxtaposed many different architecural styles.

Hofburg: The main entrance to the palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • The entrance is Michaelertor, this part of the palace complex is called Michaelertrakt. If you walked through the entrance under the dome, through a courtyard and out the other side of the building, you would end up in the square (platz) in front of Neue Burg.- As you can see, the Michaelertor, is guarded by grandiose statues of Hercules and other heroic figures.-

    Hofburg: Schatzkammer (in Hofburg)
  • Tip Rating:
  • By far the most rewarding of all the Hofburg museums (daily except Tues 10am–6pm; öS100/€7.27), is the imperial Schatzkammer or Treasury. Here you can see some of the finest medieval craftsmanship and jewellery in Europe, including the imperial regalia and relics of the Holy Roman Empire, not to mention the Habsburgs' own crown jewels, countless reliquaries and robes, gold work and silverware. You can wander at will around the twenty or so rooms, but, since the labelling is in German only, it's worth picking up one of the portable computer guides available free of charge.

    Hofburg: Albertina & Augustinerkirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • The top of the Albertina offers a great view of the Opera, the back of the Hofburg, the Burggarten, the Augustinerkirche and--off in the distance--Karntnerstrasse. The 12 meter platform at the Albertina is the only remaining portion of Vienna's city walls which were demolished in 1858. The Albertina is named after Duke Albert, who married Maria-Theresia’s favorite daughter, Marie-Christine. He was to become the Governor General of the Austrian Netherlands, and throughout his life he established a massive art collection which is now a public museum. The Albertinaplatz is also home to one of Vienna's official Tourist Information Centers, a great facility with maps, hotel reservations, and much other info. We stopped here to get our hotel reservations.

    Hofburg: ALBERTINA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Albertina is located in the baroque Palais Taroucca. The Palais was remodeled in 19th century for Maria Teresia's son-in-law, Duke Albert von Sachen-Teschen. Alberina has the biggest collection of grafic works.
