Hofburg is the palace of the Habsburg Dynasty in Austria. This is a building complex with a superb architecture. The squares, the courtyards, and the parks of the palace make a good connection with the imposing gates, the numerous statues and with all what suggest architectural creations. The palace was the main residence of the Habsburgs for more as seven centuries, and it is called “the labyrinth of the Habsburgs”. The palace has got an area of 240000 sqm, 18 building wings, 19 yards and 2600 rooms.

    Hofburg: The Schweizertor
  • Tip Rating:
  • Known as the Swiss gate, it leads from In der Burg to the Swiss courtyard. It's part of the facade of the Old Palace & was built in 1522. Take note of the Hapsburg eagle. From here, make your way to the TREASURY. This is one of the most impressive collections & most probably the most important one in the world! I was totally surprised at how rich the Hapsburg Empire was... yeah, pardon my ignorance. Hehe, sometimes ignorance is bliss ;-) Here you will find the insignia of the Holy Roman Empire, Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire (962), Imperial Cross (c 1024), Imperial Sword (11th century), crown of Emperor Rudolf II, Hyacinth La Bella (a captured diamond sabre) & the Communion objects of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

THE HOFBURG - the Imperial Palace is laid out in no particular order. As it's construction ranged from 13th century to the 19th century, one might be entering its compound without realising it's indeed part of the Hofburg. Predominantly the architectural style is Baroque & Neo-classical. So, this should be a good guide when viewing the many complexes of the Hofburg. Some of the main attractions are: 1) Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury) - Highly recommended. 2) Imperial Apartments - Reichskanzleitrakt (Apartments of Franz-Joseph I & Empress Elizabeth), Kaiserappartements & Alexander I's Apartments. 3) Burgkapelle (Chapel of Assumption). 4) Ephesos Museum (Museum of Ephesus). 5) Museum fur Volkerkunde (Museum of Ethnography). 6) Spanische Reitschule (Spanish Riding School). 7) Josefsplatz. 8) Nationalbibliothek (Imperial Court's Library).

    Hofburg: Tour the Hofburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Hofburg is the Court Palace is of the Hapsburg Empire. Although the palace itself dates from the 12th century, there have been so many additions and renovations through out the centuries one cannot see much of its medieval past. This being the case it is hard to say where to begin when seeing the Hofburg. It is in fact made up of several different galleries and museum. You will have to decide which ones you want to see. I visited the Schatzkammer where you can view the crown jewels of the Hapburg Empire. I highly recommend that you do so, as they are stunning. The Hofburg also has a Museum of Ethnology, a Museum of Early Musical Instruments and a collection of arms and hunting weapons which I also visited.

  • I love the entrances and doors so I always take pictures of them. This one is in the area of Hofburg and it is really wonderful. If you can understand Latin you can read all the info right on the place. The Gate is calling Swiss Gate.

  • The magnificent Hofburg palace ranks among the most popular attractions in Vienna. The whole complex covers an area of 240,000m², has 18 wings with 2,600 rooms, 50 staircases and 19 yards. It comprises several styles of architecture, ranging from Gothic to Ringstrassen style. Until the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918 this was the residence of the Habsburg family and the center of the Emperor´s reign. In the Hofburg you will find the Austrian National Library, various museums and the world-famous Spanish Riding School with Lipizzaner horses. In addition, there are the treasure chambers, the Burgkapelle chapel and the Heldenplatz square with the statue of Prinz Eugen. Because of time limitation we only saw the backside of Hofburg. I thought this was impressive already, untill I recently looked at some pictures of the rest of the whole place. Magnificent!!!

    Hofburg: Neue Burg

  • For more than seven centuries, the great empire of the Habsburgs was ruled from the Imperial Palace. Today, the Gothic Imperial Chapel, where the Vienna Boys’ Choir performs during High Mass on Sunday, is a remnant of the Imperial Palace during the Middle Ages. In the center of the old city, you can admire the splendor and magnificence of the daily life of the noblest family of the Habsburg monarchy when you visit the private apartments and state rooms. Numerous museums and collections represent the imperial family’s passion for art. The Imperial Palace, which until 1918 was inhabited by the imperial family, was originally a castle built in the thirteenth century, which was extended to a splendid residence in accordance with the increasing power of the Habsburgs and the expansion of their realm. Today, the Imperial Palace houses the office of the President of Austria as well as an important congress center and numerous art collections.

  • The Hofburg, just inside the Inner Ring, was started in 1279 and eventually became the imperial residence of the Habsburgs. Franz Joseph I, a resident for 86 years, slept on a spartan iron bedstead in his luxuriously appointed apartment as did his wife, the very elegant and beautiful Empress Elizabeth, affectionately known as Sissi by the Viennese, in hers. Franz Joseph ruled for 68 years. Accompanying his spartan tastes in comfort was an equally spartan attitude towards food. The etiquette of the day dictated that courses end once the emperor had finished eating. At large banquets, many guests had hardly been served their first course by the time Franz Joseph had finished his last. A tradition arose for guests to retire to the nearby Hotel Sacher for dinner, after dinner. The Hotel Sacher still serves the world famous Sacher torte (a chocolate cake layered with apricot jam) created there. The Hofburg, also houses the Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury) containing an abundance of treasures from the past. The thousand year old bejeweled crown of the Holy Roman Empire is on display here as well as other imperial insignia. But what's truly astonishing are the relics on display in the Ecclesiastical Treasury. Amongst its treasures is the Holy Lance which is reputed to have pierced the side of the Lord and thus bathed in His blood. There are several thorns from Christ's Crown of Thorns, particles of the True Cross, one of which has a nail hole thought to have soaked up His Blood, hairs from his beard, droplets of His blood, a piece of his shroud, and the nail that pinned Christ's right hand to the Cross. St. Stephan's purse is said to have contained his blood, another reliquary contains one of St. Peter's molars, another a fragment of the Virgin Mary's veil. All together, the Schatzkammer is one of the finest treasuries in Europe.

This is one of my favorite statues out of the 4 at the base of MONUMENT TO FRANCIS i. There are 4 statues of Peace, Might, Faith & Justine at the base. All sculpted by Pompeo Marchesi from 1842-46. Note the expression... If I'm not wrong, this is within the inner courtyard surrounded by the Baroque buildings belonging to the Alte Burg (Old Palace).

  • This is the Hapsburgs' Imperial Palace. The construction first began in 1279, and this remained the home of the Kaisers until 1918. Currently it is the residence of the Chancellor, so tours of Hofburg are not permitted. It is great to just walk around and marvel at the archtecture of the buildings if you dont have time or desire to go into the many museums. I found the Schatzkammer most interesting, as it has the crowns, sceptres, and robes of the Hapsburgs, as well as religious artifacts made of precious metals. You can also see the Imperial Apartments and the Hapsburg Silver collection in another part of the complex. Other museums here include: Lipizzaner Museum, Burgskapelle, and the Nationalbibliothek.
