Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Church of St Charles
  • Tip Rating:
  • Emperor Charles VI vowed to build this church if the black plague stopped. Construction on Karlskirche, dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, began in 1716. Rottmayr painted many of the frescoes inside the church. The green copper dome is 72m (236 ft.) high, a dramatic landmark on the Viennese skyline. Two columns, spinoffs from Trajan's Column in Rome, flank the front of the church, which opens onto Karlsplatz. There's also a sculpture by Henry Moore in a little pool. All in all it is a very interesting place to visit.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Karlskirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • Karlskirche is certainly one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Vienna and besides the times of church-service it is used as a museum and you have to pay an entrance-fee in order to see the great works of art there. On the other hand there are construction-works going on there at the moment and a giant construction including a lift takes up visitors and restaurators to the very top of the church - a unique possibility to see these great works of art from a short distance !! Photography only without flash or tripod !! Karlskirche was constructed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, who was also the architect of Schoenbrunn and Palais Trautson. The frescos in the dome were made by Johann Michael Rottmayer in 1725, showing the glory of holy Karl Borromäus, that is where the name Karls-Kirche comes from. The church is open to the public against a fee of 6 Euros mondays-fridays 07.30a.m. - 07.00p.m., saturday it opens at 08.30 and sunday at 09.00a.m.

  • Karlskirche (Church of St. Charles Borromeo) is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, which features a gigantic dome; a portico modeled on a Greek temple; 2 minaret-like columns (covered with spiraling relieves depicting the life of St. Charles Bartolomeo), which were actually inspired by Trajan’s column in Rome; and 2 gatehouses resembling Chinese pavilions. The interior of the cathedral is overwhelmingly beautiful. It contains altarpieces by Daniel Gran and Martino Altomonte and extraordinary high altar showing St. Charles Bartolomeo being asumed into heaven.

Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: The Church of St. Charles
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Church of St. Charles/ Karlskirche: Dedicated to St Charles Borromeo, known for his work with plague victims in Italy. Second only to St. Stephens Cathedral, this imposing Baroque building was built to fulfill a vow made by Charles VI during the plague in 1713.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: KARLSKIRCHIE
  • Tip Rating:
  • KARLSKIRCHIE is one of the best samples of the Baroque architecture in Vienna. This church was constructed in first half of XVIIIth century. In front of the church you can see a sculpture by Henry More - that's the one I'm sitting on with my friend from primary school. Well, this picture was taken back in 1992.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Karlskirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • Karlskirche is the famous baroque church in Vienna and was built to honor Saint Borromeo. The project was of Johann Fischer von Erlach. In winter there is the Christmas market (Christkindlmarkts) and it was worth a visit especially to warm yourself with some 'Gluhwein' which is bursting with spicy flavors. The Christmas markets also have some wooden handcrafted gifts, food like sausages, pretzels, gingerbread, nuts and etc.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Karlschirche-The best
  • Tip Rating:
  • Church of St. Charles Boromeo. Built at request of Emporer Karl VI in 1713. It took 25 years to finish. The cupola is 210 feet tall, and columns are 150 feet. It ended up being over budget and therefore, the gilded gold inside and the detail is intricate. One of the most beautiful in Europe. It was built in 1713 by Charles VI edict to recognize the plague ending, and named after Charles Borromeo, healer of the plague.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Karlskirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • Karlskirche, begun in 1715, in Vienna, is dedicated to Carlo Borromeo, the Italian cardinal and saint of the Counter Reformation. What is most extraordinary about this structure is the successful coherence of its design despite a seemingly irreconcilable eclecticism. In front of a longitudinally placed oval nave stands an unusually wide facade composed of a bizarre combination of elements. A Corinthian hexastyle temple portico on top of a stepped podium, archaeological in its fidelity to Roman temple fronts, represents the entrance to the church.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: The Karlskirche.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Emperor Karl IV vowed, in 1713 a plague epidemic, that as soon as the city was free from its plight he would build a church. He would dedicate it to St. Charles Borromeo - a former Archbishop of Milan and a patron of the plague. In 1714 he announced a competition to design the church and this was won by the archtitect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The resulting church is a richly ornate Baroque masterpiece.

There are two buildings designed in 1899 year by Otto Wagner there. In the past they were the entries to the city trains. Now there are the cafe and the small museum of Otto Wagner there. They are nice art nouveau's works.
