Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: St. Charles' Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • Emperor Charles VI commissioned this church because of a vow taken during a plague epidemic. It was built by the eminent baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and was finished in 1739.

Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Baroque at its best
  • Tip Rating:
  • Probably the nicest church of Vienna is Karlskirche. You can see its dome from far away in quite a few areas around Karlsplatz, it seems to attract you to come over and see more of it. The church was built after the black death had caused tens of thousands of victims in the 18th century. It's the biggest baroque building north of the Alps. Unfortunately there is a fee charged to enter the church. As I mentioned here several times already, I don't pay for churches. So I can't tell you what it looks like inside. I bet it's impressive though...

  • The beautiful Karlskirche is the only church I will mention, for the simple reason that it is not within the Ring. The other most beautiful churches of Vienna are in that area, so they are virtually impossible to miss. The St. Karl it is dedicated to is actually an Italian, San Carlo Borromeo, from the aristocratic family that owned the beautiful little islands in the Lago Maggiore.

Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: A beautiful Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • This church , built by the Emperor Charles and dedicated to St Charles, was built just outside the ringstrasse, in thanks giving for delivery from the plague. This is a great church, and not too big either. The added bonus at the moment is that they are restoring the frescos in the dome, and you can travel up in the lift to look at them more closely, an opportunity not to miss.

Karlsplatz is home to the very impressive Karlskirche. Construction on the church took from 1715 to 1739, and the structure was dedicated to Saint Karl Borromeo. The two tall, freestanding pillars in front depict the life of Saint Karl. The elegant dome stands 72 meters high. It is the largest Baroque cathedral north of the Alps. Karlsplatz was originally created in 1862 and was called the Resselpark. In the 1970s the park was redesigned to today's Karlsplatz. This park is home to two pavilions which were built in 1899.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Karlskirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • "Rising majestically above everything around it, the Karlskirche is, without doubt, the city's finest Baroque Church." So sez "The Rough Guide to Vienna," and I think few visitors to the city - and architectural cognoscenti - would disagree. This is another piece with the architectural imprint of Vienna's princes of 18th century design, Johann Fischer von Erlach senior and Johann Fischer von Erlach junior. It was conceived and designed as a memorial to those who died in the terrible Plague of 1713; it is appropriately dedicated to one of the Catholic Church's great service saints, St. Carlo Borromeo, who ministered to the sick and the dying in 16th century Milan. The towering pillars depict scenes from Borromeo's heroic life. But it's the dome which is the true piece de resistance here. It's a thing of glory, one of the signature features of the Viennese skyline, and beautifully illuminated at night.

  • Church of St Charles Borromeo is one of the best example of Baroque in Vienna. Located near Kralplatz. Its 236 feet domw looks very impressive and you could see it from far.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: The Karlskirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Karlskirche is absolutely stunning!!! My second favorite church in Europe. Wonderful exterior and scrumptious interior. If you have spiritual interests and enjoy looking at beautiful art then you could probably spend an hour inside and out of this church. It's just beautiful! The exterior is very very very cool looking!
