Lipizzaner is cross-breed of Spanish, Arab and Berber horses, first time imported from Spain in 1562, and in 1580 a stud was established in small town of Lipica, today in Slovenia.
The Lipizzaner Museum is located within the former Imperial Court Pharmacy, portraying the history of Lipizzaner horses. The visitor can discover over four hundred years of the world's oldest breed of horse, from their beginning in Lipica and the esteemed institution of the Spanish Riding School. The museum collection is rich of saddles, bridless and riding uniforms throughtout the history.

The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only institution in the world where classic equestrian skills (haute école) are still practised and presented in a pure form as they have been for the past four centuries. Today the performances are attended and admired by hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. The Lipizzaner Museum in the Stallburg, Vienna’s most important Renaissance building, depicts the history of the famous horses from their origins in Lipizza (near Trieste) in the 16th century down to the present. Paintings, engravings, drawings, photographs, uniforms, harnesses as well as video and film presentations provide a comprehensive and varied overview of the history, breeding and training of the Lipizzaner horses. The highlight is the unique view of the stables in which the horses are housed. This affords visitors a close-up view of the horses.
