Oper / Staatsoper: A night at the opera
Try to get tickets for a night at the opera or ballet: Viennas opera houses and theaters feature lots of high-qualitiy performances. They are fun ... and also a serious social event.

Oper / Staatsoper: Opera House
Vienna is full of magnificent buildings and the Opera House is just another fine example of the architecture in the city.

Oper / Staatsoper: State Opera House
Viennaýs State Opera House is, no doubt, one of the best theatres in the world. Some of the best directors worked here: Mahler, Strauss, Krauss, Von Karajan are just examples. The architects of this impressive palace have not gained much from the placeýs fame, though: Eduard van der Null committed suicide because the citizens of Vienna did not like his work, and August von Sicardsburg died soon afterwards. The building was badly damaged during World War II, but completely restored in 1955 according to original designs.

Oper / Staatsoper: Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera):
We were in Vienna and walked past the Opera House. I love opera and lo and behold, an opera was starting in 30 minutes. The four of us decided to see if we could get tickets and amazingly to me tickets were pretty easy to come by for standing room. Ticket prices are heavily subsidized, a practice initiated by Emperor Franz Joseph I. We were able to pickup the tickets for around $5 US, more than reasonable. Be careful ordering a box seat; one in the back of the box is $12, one in the front $240. New devices at each seat provide subtitles in English and five other languages. In 1861 construction of The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) was started. It was the first monumental building of artistic importance on the Ringstrase. The building was finished in 1869, but it was severely criticized, people spoke of a "sunken box. On March 12, 1945, during World War II the stage was destroyed by bombs and the building gutted by fire. The foyer, vestibule and the tea room were spared, but almost the entire decor, properties and equipment for more than 120 operas with around 150,000 costumes were destroyed. After the war reconstruction of the State Opera was started in 1948 and completed in 1955 with a seating capacity for accommodate 2,209 people 1,642 seats and standing room for 567.

Oper / Staatsoper: Flight of the Valkyrie
While standing room tickets for the opera are cheap (1-3 euros) and well positioned, they leave something to be desired by way of comfort. Consider before you buy, that operas are on the longish side (we are talking like 3-6 hours of standing) and the cheap seats are also the crowded seats so be prepared to fight for your right to opera. Not to mention that operas in general are pretty ridiculous. That being said, its all worth it when the main title song booms into the room at the start of the third act, its like Apocalypse Now all over again.

Oper / Staatsoper: Really enjoyed my first opera
Wow...I can't believe that I actually had a great time at my first opera. The setting was the Volksoper Wien and the opera was the "Magical Flute/Die Zauberflöte" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We had great seats (and got them at a very good price) which provided awesome views of the performance. Now I’ve got to admit that jetlag started to kick in during the 1st half of the performance...but after the break and having the opportunity to stretch, we regrouped and enjoyed the show. Bottom line, if you visit Vienna, you must take in an opera (in addition to all the other things you want to do), and the price is not bad at all...$55.30 euro (approximately 67.30/USD) per ticket.
