Oper / Staatsoper: Vienna's Opera
  • Tip Rating:
  • Staatsoper (State Opera House) is 1 of the world best opera houses (operas are almost always performed in their original language). It was built in 1861-1869 and was the 1st monumental structure of the Ring Boulevard at that time.

Oper / Staatsoper: State Opera house
  • Tip Rating:
  • For a small fee, you can take a tour of this magnificent piece of architecture. For about $2 you can even see a show there-but you have to stand up. One of the most beautiful opera houses in the world. It’s so big that I have yet to see a picture, which captures the entire structure. It has a nice gift shop, too, for music lovers. It is also possible to take tours of just the opera house during the daytime.

Oper / Staatsoper: State Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • This Opera House is one of the most famous Opera Theaters in the world. Some of the best directors of all times have performed here. The list is almost endless, but to name just a few: Mahler, Strauss, Krauss and von Karajan. The origins of this Opera House are not very fortunate; one of its architects (Eduard van der Nüll) killed himself because he couldn’t stand the negative reaction of the citizens of Vienna to his work. The other architect (August von Sicardsburg) died soon after too. The Opera House was almost totally destroyed in the World War 2, but soon after was reconstructed following the original plans (it was reopened in 1955).

    Oper / Staatsoper: Staatsoper
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna is a city that lives with arts especially with the classical music and the operas. So everbody has to buy a classical music cd from the Virgin Records music shop on Kaerntner Strasse or go to an opera at staatsoper. Although there is an opera at the staatsoper every night, you may have a problem to find a ticket because all the tickets are sold very quickly. But you always have a chance to find tickets from the blackmarket. And it’s so easy to find these guys, they always hang out near the staatsoper all day and they whisper to you and ask if you want a ticket or not. I also have to add that the tickets are very expensive. I paid 40 Euros for a ticket at the 2 nd floor balcony and I can only see the half of the stage from my seat. If you don’t want to spend much money, you have another option. There are different zones for the cheap tickets. These tickets costs between 2-5 Euros and you don’t have a seat, you have to stand ! The hardest part is; if the opera starts at 21.00, you have to stand and wait on a long queue to get in at 18.00 If you have money or not, or if you have to stand or sit, it doesn’t matter don’t miss this unforgettable event.

Oper / Staatsoper: Rich and Famous
  • Tip Rating:
  • During your tour, you will be taken through several "rooms" and incredible prices will be given to you for some exclusive options available in the Opera. You know how tour guides know to act like they are well above you because you are just a tourist? Well, we had a wonderful guide! Her name is Svetlana and she filled us in with so many information that it is unlikely to rember a third of them. One moment you will find yourself in Schwindlerfoyer surrounded with composers busts, scenes from their operas and in the other you will be in Loggia enjoying the view on Vienna. Within next few minutes you will be taken through "Feststiege" and will be left breathless with beauty! What I didn't like too much was "Marmorsaal". It was too modern and it just didn't fit in with everything else. It was too cold and too simple. But the interesting information is that themarmor for this room was brought from all over the world.

Oper / Staatsoper: Standing-room at the State-opera's performances
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hi, nice to welcome you soon here in Vienna! As to your questions: the standing-room (for about 450 people) is generally situated behind the seats on the operas ground-floor ("Parterre"), called "Steh- (-standing-)parterre", some also at the "Balcony" as well as at the "Gallery".Tickets are sold only 80 minutes in advance at the State-Opera's box-office. There is a "community" of people, who try to go whenever possible, the more famous the singers, the earlier they line up, sometimes even at the evening before the performance. So "first come, first serve" is a common issue. If you would savor the performance as a music-lover, it is up to your personal abilities, if you are really able to "stand" the whole evening. On the other hand - opera seats are unfortunately very expensive. Whatever you decide, have a nice evening at the Vienna Opera and here in Vienna! Greetings!

Oper / Staatsoper: Go to the Opera!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I thoroughly recommend that everyone who visits Vienna sets an evening site to go to the opera at the state opera house which is argueably the most important music venue in Europe. There are performances on nearly everyday and tickets are really cheap. You can get seating tickets a couple of months in advance for as little as 9 euros from the website below or you can que up at get standing tickets a couple of hours before the performance starts for anywhere between 2 and 6 euros. Even if you dont like opera you are not spending much just to have a look around and see inside the place.

Oper / Staatsoper: The Opera itself
  • Tip Rating:
  • Our guide took us behind the stage and on it as much as possible because it was being prepared for New Year's Opera. It was interesting seeing all the people working on the stage an preparing it. It is huge! They can prepare a few stages upfront so that they can be changed during the show. A lot of technical people is required for this sort of art :) The theatre was probably the most stunning. At first I thought that it looked much bigger on TV and pictures but in fact it is very big. It has room for around 2000 viewers. That is includin booths, seating places and standing places. It has the shape of a horse shoe which makes quite a few places useless because the stage can't be seen. And those places are not just those cheap ones! NO! The royal booth is one of them. But for the "royal paar" it was much more important to be seen there than to actually see the Opera. Then there is the central royal booth which was used when they have official visitors. Otherwise it could've been sold out to public like any other but on much higher price.
