Riesenrad & Prater: The Prater (Ferris wheel)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The prater should be one everyones list of things to do. The wheel is huge and you are locked into the cages, but the views over Vienna have to be seen to be believed.

Riesenrad & Prater: Spend a fun-filled day at The...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Spend a fun-filled day at The Prater and feel like a little kid again. If you think this is just another amusement park, you're wrong, my friend. It's definitely more than that: It's an institution! And the most note-worthy attraction here must surely be the 65 meter high Giant Ferris Wheel. Oh, but the fun just doesn't end here. Check out the extra-long slides.... and laugh yourselves silly whilst you see a reflection of yourself - bent, fat or thin in the Hall of Mirrors. Or how about savoring the romantic nostalgia of an old merry-go-round.... or...or.... spend a few moments at the Planetarium? They are all not-to-be-missed.

Riesenrad & Prater: No visit is complete without it...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The main landmark of Vienna is the ferris wheel in Prater amusement park so of course we went there for a turn. I am extremely scared of heights so ferris wheels are always a nightmare for me. But how could I miss this one? It has this certain romantic flair not only since the movie "Before Sunrise" became one of my all time favourites. The ferris wheel has been there since 1897. It was built to celebrate emperor Franz Josef's 50th jubilee. Back then it still had 30 wagons, today for safety reasons there are only 13 left. From the top you get nice views of Vienna and the Prater underneath. A complete turn takes approx. 20 mts. It felt much longer because of my fear of heights ;) It's not as bad as the London Eye though as it is not as high ("only" 64 metres). Come early in the morning to avoid queuing for too long. We were here on a Sunday morning and queued for 30 mts maybe. A ticket costs 7,50 EUR.

    Riesenrad & Prater: Prater funfair
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna can be enjoyable not only for must see activities places, but for funfairs too. Prater funfair is the part of XIX-XX Viennese history and entertainment. This funfair is probably the oldest in Europe. The oldest is Giant Ferris Wheel, built in 1897. It can lift you about 60 meters and from the top it can be seen whole Vienna panorama that is even better that from Stefansdom, because there reconstruction works begin.

From it you can enjoy a great view of Vienna, during a 20-minutes-long ride. The first time I went there was very early in the morning on January 1 2000 and we were the only ones!!! The view from there is just wonderful. At the entrance the staff was offering free drinks, such as chocolate, tee and beer, and they asked what we wanted. I said: 'beer' and the man made a funny face looking at his watch, as to say: 'at this hour???' LOL

    Riesenrad & Prater: Wiener Prater
  • Tip Rating:
  • It’s a huge public park, opened to the public in 1766 by Emperor Joseph 2nd. Still now it is a meeting place for all Viennese, and it offers: A permanent funfair, with all kind of entertainment possiblities, open air cafés and restaurants and the giant Ferries Wheel.

One of the open air restaurants at the Wiener Pater, where you have to try (it’s a must!) Bratwurst (sausage) and have a beer to enjoy the Pater and Austria and its best! :P

Riesenrad & Prater: The Amusement Park...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The park where the Riesenrad is situated, has all sorts of funfair rides, from gentle children merry-go-rounds to stomach-twisting big dippers! Rides cost from Euro 1.10 to 4... As you wander around the park, you will see some weird & twisted metal human sculptures.....as captured by my camera on the left.

This big wheel is situated in a large amusement park...often known as Volksprater or Wurstelprater...; at the western end of Prater District. This huge Ferris Wheel is known to the world as Riesenrad. It was built in 1897... The wheel operates as late as midnight in summer....the fee is about € 4....
