The Prater fun-fair is a Viennese institution. Its landmark is the 65m high giant ferris wheel from which great views of the city can be had.

  • A visit to Vienna isn't complete if you haven't been in the Praterpark. It's an old amusement park famous for it's Giant Ferris Wheel. This Riesenrad is more than 100 years old and on top of it, you can enjoy a superb view on the city.

Riesenrad & Prater: The Old Ferris Wheel at Prater
  • Tip Rating:
  • The English engineering firm of Walter Basset built the Ferris Wheel in 1896-97. It has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Vienna. The wheel, with its 15 gondolas, turns at a rate of 76 cm/s ( 2.5 ft/s) and offers a magnificent panoramic view of the city.

Riesenrad & Prater: The Prater, the famous...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Prater, the famous fairground. Granted, it's a little run-down, and the Viennese carnies are no more glamorous than the carnies back home. But it's extraordinary riding in the ferris wheel from Carol Reed's 'The Third Man' where Orson Welles delivered that vicious speech. Great movie - don't come to Vienna without watching it first!

Riesenrad & Prater: I've got to recommend that...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I've got to recommend that you ride the ferris wheel in Prater park with you camera turned on a ready to go. If it's a good day outside, like when I rode the wheel, you'll be rewarded with some very good views of both the whole Prater park and the city Vienna. Don't worry about the fact that you're moving pretty quickly on the ferris wheel, you're photos should blur up at all if you hold your hands still like normal. I though it was pretty cool to get up in the air and see all of the places that I'd been walking around all day long, what a lot I was doing!

  • Directions: Take the U-Bahn Praterstern and then follow all of the carnie signs. You'll go through a park, by a hostel, and across one road before reaching the park.

Riesenrad & Prater: Prater Park, what words can describe it?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Prater Park, what else can you say about this place? You can almost smell the boiled cabbage on the carnie's breath. It's an amusing place, no matter how sad it is. It's just something you should either go and laugh at, or not go at all. But, if you've got kids, believe me, they'll love it! There are a ton of fun games, rides, and entertainers. I do suggest that you go on the weekend because I went on a weekday and there wasn't anyone there, it wasn't too much fun. Going at night may also be memorable, you decide. Prater park is a ways from town, so take the metro.

    Riesenrad & Prater: Prater Riesenrad
  • Tip Rating:
  • Prater Riesenrad, or Giant Ferris Wheel, allowing to see the city of Vienna all at once. Visit it in sunset hours, and you will have a chance to watch the sunset over Vienna, with its low red-roofed buildings and spires of churches forming a romantic skyline with the vineyard hills in the background.

Riesenrad & Prater: Riesenrad - Giant Wheel
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was towards the end of the 19th century that Kaiser Franz Josef commissioned the building of the Riesenrad - the Giant Wheel - that has since become the symbol of Vienna. The Giant Wheel carries its huge carriages to a height of 200 feet (65 metres) off the ground. One of them is a luxury carriage, which can be hired for weddings and parties for about 250 dollars an hour. The Giant Wheel was also the setting for the famous confrontation between hero Holly and villain Harry in 'The Third Man'. It was as they were leaving the amusement park that Harry pronounced his damning verdict on Switzerland: 'In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.'
