 | Vienna Ringstrasse Reviews | Tips 211 - 220 of 221 | | This is yet another famous building in Vienna's famous boulevard. It's considered to be the most important theatrical stage in German-speaking countries. The building was built in 1888. The exterior was designed by Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer, while the interior, the splendid staircase and ceiling frescoes, was done by Gustav and Ernst Klimt. Leave a Comment |
This national theater was built in 1888 by Gottfried Semper & Karl von Hasenauer in Renaissance & neo-Baroque styles. Originally founded by Maria Theresa on St. Michael's Square (this one was opened in 1741) where the national anthem was performed, the present Burgtheater was opened in Oct. 14, 1888. The statues above the portal was sculpted by Carl Kundmann while the Art Nouveau frescoes in the wings were by famous artists such as Ernst Klimt, Franz Match & Gustav brothers. Thr Ring is a superb boulevard that encircles the city and contains the government buildings. |
Today, Parliament is the seat of the National Assembly and the Ministry of State. There is a long driveway up to grand steps leading to the front of the building. Eight huge columns and statues add more character to this gorgeous building. There are two tall spires (for want of a better word) with golden eagles on top at the front of the building. Vienna is a delightful city for "walkers". Yes, there are many boulevards & avenues for leisure walks. Walking around Ringstrasse is like one is amidst in a museum, real size works of art. Personally, I love to look at architecture. It gives me a sense of continuity in history, the creative force & in some ways, the "mind" of people from different periods in time. It's a marvellous way of relating to people from the past & present. One best place to get that marvelous feeling is in Vienna. Another, Paris & Barcelona. Leave a Comment |
Vienna's Burgtheater, or the Burg as it is affectionally known, is perhaps the German speaking world's most prestigious stage. Architecturally, it is a jewel, designed by Gottfried Semper and boasting a wonderously opulent foyer. It says a lot about the cultural keenness of the Viennese that all new productions staged by the Burg are closely scruitinized and much discussed, and there is never a free seat in the house. the weihnachtsmarkt in front of the rathaus (town hall) is very cute, with gummibear lanterns hung in the enormous trees. i would suggest trying out the food here since there are a lot of eastern european foods like hungarian loggos and so on. the surroundings are a pretty place in which to sip glýhwein...
