Ringstrasse: Burgtheater
  • Tip Rating:
  • Day 2 : Ringstrasse Opposite the Neues Rathaus (New City Hall), just cross the Rathauspark, is the imposing Burgtheater. This theatre is the most prestigious of the German-speaking world. The original building dates from the period of Maria-Theresa and was replaced in 1888 by the present building, built in an Italian Renaissance style. This is a wonderful building with rich decorations. On the roof there are two statues which represent the two muses of music and of dramatic art. As I am a theatre lover, I think it must be an unforgettable experience to see a performance in this magnificent hall . . . maybe something for my next Vienna visit, who knows . . .

    Ringstrasse: Stadtpark
  • Tip Rating:
  • This beautiful park was designed in the mid 19th century by Rudolf Siebeck, Vienna's first municipal gardener. There are numerous monuments and statues throughout the park, including the famous Strauss monument.

    Ringstrasse: Rathausplatz Weihnachtsmarkt
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rathausplatzweihnachtsmarkt is the biggest one - although possibly not the best. It is certainly though the more touristy one of all. There are a large number of stands selling, jewellery, picture frames, toys, chocolates, balloons and of course the Punsch stands. The process for buying Punsch is the same at all Christmas markets - you pay a deposit for a cup, which you pay with your first drink. Thereafter you can take the cup back to any stand or have a refill. A lot of people tend to take the mugs home with them (hence the necessity of the deposit - this year it is €2). There are also a number of fairground style roundabouts and rides for children - for whom wandering through the hordes is not the funnest experience. From twilight on the market is usually packed with people - regardless of what day of the week You are advised to take good care of your personal possessions - there are apparently pick-pictures circulating and the densely crowded square is a perfect haven for them.

Ringstrasse: Pallas Athena statue in front of the Parliament
  • Tip Rating:
  • In front of the Austrian Parliament building stands a monumental fountain with a marble statue of the goddess Pallas Athena (over 5 m) and six allegorical figures: sitting on the left: Execution of Laws and on the right: Legislation, lying: in front the rivers Inn and Danube, towards the ramp, the rivers Elbe and Moldau (Vltava) (the above rivers were the main waterways of the Kingdoms and Provinces Represented in the Reichsrat). The statues consist of marble from Laas, the superstructure and the basin are made of granite. The fountain is flanked by two flagstaffs of steel (approx. 30 m). When the National Council, the Federal Council or the Federal Assembly are sitting the red-white-red colours are hoisted on the flagstaffs.

    Ringstrasse: Burgtheater (National Theater)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Vienna's National Theater (Burgtheater) was built from 1874 to 1888, according to designs by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. Ever since 1776, when Emperor Joseph II founded the Court and National Theater, the institution preceding the present-day Burgtheater, this theater, with its distinguished company, has held a leading position in the dramatic arts of the German-speaking countries.

Ringstrasse: the Urania observatory (Urania Sternwarte)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first thing that caught my eye, when approaching the Urania, was its exceptional Jugenstil architecture and itswhite colour: very striking. Only later we discovered that it was also the home of the Observatory of Vienna, as well as a public educational institute. It was built by the architect Max Fabiani in 1910 - and the name was chosen because Urania is the muse of Astronomy. Can you see the dome in the photo? That's where the observatory is. One good moment to visit the Urania is during the Viennale film festival, since some movies are screened there. There's apparently also a puppet theatre, if it is to your liking.

    Ringstrasse: Parlament
  • Tip Rating:
  • Theophil Hansen created his masterpiece for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy from 1874-1883, the new Reichsrat building, which is now since 1918 the "parlament", seat of national and federal government. The architecture is reflective of ancient Greece; the pillared porch (porticus) with eight Corinthian columns is clearly inspired from old temple forms. In its gable is a depiction of the Bestowal of the Constitution to the Austrian Peoples by Franz Joseph I. The National Council is seated in the building?s north wing, the Federal Council in the south wing. Two mighty ramps, flanked by bronze horse-tamers, lead past marble likenesses of antique historians up to the "porticus". The fountain of Pallas-Athena dominates the space between the two ramps. Carl Kundmann finished the four meter high statue of the "Goddess of Wisdom" in 1902. At her feet tumble the old Austrian river- gods of the Danube, Inn, Elbe, and Moldau.

    Ringstrasse: Rathaus (Vienna City Hall)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Friedrich Schmidt, who had been the architect of the Cathedral of Cologne (Koln), designed and built Vienna's City Hall, the most important secular building in the neo-Gothic style in the city, between 1872 and 1883. The tower measures 109m, not including the Iron Knight of City Hall (Eiserner Rathausmann) who measures almost 7m to the top of his pennant. This knight on top of the tower has become one of the symbols of Vienna. The City Hall is the seat of the mayor and governor of Vienna (Vienna being both a city and a state since 1922, these functions are combined in one person), of the City Council and of the Assembly. It also houses the Municipal and State Libraries and Archives which hold many key documents of Vienna´s history and a large collection of local memorabilia. The Park of City Hall (Rathauspark) is a very attractively laid-out garden with two fountains and several interesting monuments, among them the memorial to the painter F. G. Waldmuller and the statues of two great composers of waltzes, Johann Strauss the Father and Joseph Lanner. Facing the Burgtheater across the Ring are monuments to President Theodor Korner (1873-1957) and Mayor Karl Seitz (1869-1950).

    Ringstrasse: Rathaus
  • Tip Rating:
  • The city Hall (Rathaus in German) holds the office of the mayor of the city of Vienna and the governor of the state of Vienna, the Assembly and the City Council. It was built in a neo-Gothic style by Friedriech von Schimdt between 1872 and 1883. This 321 feet building is the most important secular work of this style in the city. On both sides there’s the Park of the City Hall (Rathauspark), a very attractive park. On the top of the tower sits the "Iron Knight of City Hall" (Eiserner Rathausmann), which is one of the symbols of Vienna.
